We involve community members in our work and provide a public service through investigative reporting, community-centered storytelling and stories that inform and empower.
In 2025 our national honors included being named a Pulitzer finalist for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary, and winning an Institute for Nonprofit News Insight Award for Visual Journalism for our reporting on fentanyl’s impacts. We also won a First Amendment Coalition Free Speech and Open Government award for our reporting on illegal rent increases in public housing.
Responsibilities
Lead investigative and community reporters covering issues of national, state and local significance.
Play a key role in producing important investigations and projects, while helping turn quicker local accountability stories for readers across the county.
Guide editorial workflows, manage projects, and contribute to the development of reporting that has impact.
Qualifications
Skilled as an investigative reporter and/or editor with a track record of delivering high-quality reporting with impact.
Value in engaging with diverse audiences to inform reporting and hiring practices.
Experience covering immigration, the environment, federal or state government, legal affairs or law enforcement is a plus.
Experience managing reporters and editorial workflows strongly preferred, but not required for the right candidate.
Exceptional line editing; commitment to accuracy and fairness; strong interpersonal and team skills; excellent organization and communication skills; and the ability to lead, coach and inspire direct reports in-person and remotely.
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in journalism; willingness to engage with diverse communities.
Location We will only consider candidates located in or willing to relocate to the San Diego area.
