ESSENTIAL DUTIES Bridge Section
Civil Engineers V in the Bridge Section will manage bridge projects, including schedules, contracts, funding, and material procurement, and will supervise personnel. They will assess inspection reports, resolve complex engineering design and construction problems, monitor work in progress, and evaluate engineering changes and contract amendments. They will oversee field surveys, prepare and review engineering design calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates, write specifications, and manage payment approvals.
Highway Section
Civil Engineers V in the Highway Section will serve as Senior Project Managers for projects such as major roadway reconstruction and reconfiguration, arterial street resurfacing, viaduct clearance improvements, traffic signal modernization, intersection reconfiguration, and state‑of‑good‑repair upgrades. They will develop project scopes, budgets and schedules; manage design engineering consultants; conduct design review meetings; represent the City at community meetings; coordinate with utilities and other agencies; prepare engineering designs and cost estimates; manage contracts and payments; and attend construction review meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, plus three years of progressively responsible Civil Engineering experience, including one year of supervisory experience, or equivalent experience.
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) in the State of Illinois is required. A valid Illinois driver's license is also required.
Selection Requirements
Interview required. Bidders with qualifying experience will be hired in seniority order and per the collective bargaining agreement; non‑bidders will be selected if qualifications match.
Preference
Previous experience as a design or project engineer on bridge projects
Previous experience performing field inspections on bridge/roadway infrastructures
Previous experience designing bridge repairs
Previous experience reviewing project scopes, calculations, plans, specifications, and estimates
Previous experience working with transportation agencies (e.g., CDOT, IDOT, FHWA)
Previous project management experience in urban transportation design and/or construction projects
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (OneNote, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
