Job Title: Associate Director Reports To: Executive Director

Location: Fort Bend History Association, Fort Bend Museum, Richmond, Texas

Annual Salary: $57,000-$60,000

Position Summary The Associate Director is a leadership position at the Fort Bend History Association, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Fort Bend Museum and its two historic homes, the Moore Home and the Long‑Smith Cottage. This role supports the Executive Director and is a vital part of strategic planning, staff supervision, and ensuring smooth and effective museum operations. The Associate Director will manage a team of 3–5 staff members and oversee multiple historic buildings to ensure preservation, functionality, and public accessibility.

Key Responsibilities Operations Management

Oversee daily museum operations, including visitor services, facilities management, education, outreach, site rentals, and safety procedures.

Ensure compliance with museum policies, legal regulations, and best practices for historic preservation.

Develop and implement procedures that promote efficiency and a high-quality visitor experience.

Financial Responsibilities

Prepares monthly financial and narrative reports.

Ensure budgetary compliance for departmental operating budgets: gift shop, admission, site rentals, programs, etc.

Develops and tracks earned income from all sources, including site rentals, gift shop, education programs and special events.

Staff Supervision

Manage and support a team of 3–5 staff members, including roles in education, exhibits, site rentals and visitor services. This may include interns participating in our internship program for staff.

Provide leadership, mentorship, and annual performance evaluations for staff.

Coordinate staff schedules and training opportunities.

Historic Property Oversight

Oversee the care, maintenance, and interpretation of multiple historic buildings on museum grounds.

Work with vendors, contractors, and preservation specialists to maintain the structural and historical integrity of the properties.

Ensure building safety, ADA compliance, and readiness for public access and programming.

Strategic & Administrative Support

Assist the Executive Director in developing and implementing strategic plans, annual goals, events and budgets.

Represent the museum at community events, professional meetings, and collaborative projects.

Track monthly attendance, volunteer hours of auxiliary organizations and community service hours.

Public Engagement & Program Support

Collaborate with staff to plan and execute public programs, exhibitions, and educational initiatives.

Support marketing and outreach efforts to increase visibility and attendance.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in history, Museum Studies, Public History, Nonprofit Management, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Minimum of 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in a museum, historic site, or cultural organization.

Demonstrated experience managing teams and supervising staff.

Familiarity with historic building management and preservation practices.

Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with museum collections databases, Canva, and Square POS a plus.

Familiarity with website building platforms so the Fort Bend Museum website is always up to date.

Work Environment And Schedule

This is a full-time, on-site position with occasional evening and weekend hours required for events and programs.

Must be able to walk across historic grounds, climb stairs and ladders, and lift to 25 lbs.
