Financial Aid Counselor
to join our Financial Aid Team. Providing a high level of service to students, the Financial Aid Counselor will respond to inquiries regarding financial assistance and advise students and families about financial aid eligibility, application procedures, costs and financial policies, tailoring information to the student’s needs. Essential Job Functions Customer Service Counsel students and families on financial aid issues via phone, email and in-person meetings. Respond to emails and phone inquiries to answer questions and resolve issues. Rotate front desk duty (greeting students, answering questions, directing to the appropriate person). Rotate as “walk-in” counselor (meet with students and families for in-depth conversations). Attend and present at campus events such as Accepted Student Day, Open House and Welcome Weekend. Processing Determine student eligibility for financial aid and process related documents; review special circumstances and appeals. Award and distribute financial aid packages. Administer the university’s endowed and annual scholarship funds. Administer the verification process and verify data on financial aid applications using tax information provided by students. Administer Federal Direct Loan, Grant Programs and Private Loans, including origination, disbursement, reporting and reconciliations. Serve as University VA certifying official. Maintain knowledge of PowerFaids and Jenzabar student information systems. Assist with yearly setup, reporting and testing. Process FAFSA results (ISIRs) and collect all proper documentation from students/parents; update student records as needed. Other Duties and Responsibilities Serve on campus and financial aid-related committees. Participate in interpreting and implementing Federal Methodology, verification requirements, and federal/state regulations by reading relevant guides. Assist with administration of Federal and state grants and Direct Loan programs; maintain NSLDS transfer monitoring. This list of duties is not all-inclusive and may be expanded as needed. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a closely-related field. Demonstrated successful experience in financial aid administration including Title IV programs or the equivalent. Knowledge of federal, local, and state aid programs. Demonstrated knowledge in management of financial aid need analysis, packaging and revisions. Skills and Abilities Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to speak effectively before groups. Ability to work with students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Ability to read and interpret documents such as tax returns, manuals and regulatory materials. Ability to meet deadlines and handle administrative tasks under pressure. Collaborative and able to work with others. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Attention to financial data detail; ability to review charges and calculate amounts due. Ability to follow written or oral instructions and solve complex issues using regulations as guidance. Keen data review skills and ability to use technology to streamline processes. Physical Demands The role is largely sedentary; occasional movement within the work area and campus is required. The job operates in a professional office environment with standard equipment. Some evening and weekend work may be necessary for campus programs. Why Join MSOE?
