Overview

Senior Principal Scientist, Discovery Bioanalytical Strategy Lead position at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine. This strategic role manages the integration of bioanalytical approaches—both in vitro and in vivo—across all therapeutic modalities, aligning with discovery objectives and enabling seamless transitions into development. The role leads the progression of bioanalytical capabilities, combines advanced technical applications with discovery strategies, and partners globally with team leaders to implement scientifically relevant, right-sized solutions in a non-regulated environment. The incumbent serves as a critical bridge between global discovery bioanalytical teams and key stakeholders to ensure that bioanalytical project strategy aligns with scientific needs across functions, driving faster transitions from discovery to development and improving speed to clinic. Responsibilities

Strategic Integration & Leadership: Serve as central point-of-contact for BDDS discovery project teams and manage assignments for discovery team-facing roles and transition to downstream BDDS development teams. Develop and execute a bioanalytical strategy that aligns with project team needs and drug discovery goals, emphasizing urgency, priority, and fit-for-purpose approaches. Act as a thought leader on modality strategy and innovation across the global discovery bioanalysis teams, including data science integration, emerging technologies, and strategic harmonization. Lead the maintenance and optimization of resource tracking systems to enable efficient bioanalytical support for modality-agnostic discovery programs across the discovery portfolio. Align strategic vision to deploy digital data tools and new alternative methodology (NAM) workflows across discovery bioanalytical labs supporting discovery and preclinical projects. Provide informed discovery project and milestone updates (e.g., lead selection, NME-readiness) to BDDS leadership teams. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with key stakeholders (e.g., therapeutics discovery, PSTS, and therapeutic areas) to ensure bioanalytical approaches support modality and candidate selection toward NME readiness. Act as a primary liaison between discovery bioanalysis team leaders and discovery project teams to ensure the bioanalytical strategy for internal lab-based activities. Serve as primary interface with downstream BDDS functions including BA strategy transition and transfer to internal development teams; partner with BA outsourcing and portfolio management teams. Collaborate with PSTS leaders and internal BA teams to enable implementation of workflows and analytical capabilities supporting NAMs in the discovery and preclinical setting. Partner with data science teams to drive model-informed scalable infrastructure for real-time data access, visualization, and decisional project support. Qualifications/Requirements

Education

Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related field is required. PhD or PharmD is preferred. Skills/Experience

Minimum of 8+ years of experience in drug discovery within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry. Strong scientific background and understanding regarding implementation of bioanalytical strategy based on project or modality-specific requirements. Thorough understanding of drug discovery process across therapeutic modalities. Proven track record with development and execution of advanced bioanalytical techniques to address pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and ADME questions. Deep expertise in analytical or bioanalytical platforms, e.g., mass spectrometry, nano/micro LC, QPCR, ligand binding assays. Strong understanding of lab automation and digital platforms in life sciences. Proven ability to lead cross-functional strategies and manage complex, multi-site initiatives.
