Job Description
The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for leading the delivery of automation systems across diverse industrial sectors. This position requires deep technical proficiency in control systems including PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA platforms, and strong leadership in managing both the engineering team and direct client relationships. The engineer will guide projects from concept through implementation, ensuring quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Lead automation system projects, including design, programming, testing, commissioning, and qualification
Develop control system architecture and specifications, and select appropriate hardware/software platforms
Program PLCs, DCS, RTUs, and HMIs using Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and other control languages
Design industrial networks using Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, and similar protocols
Create system documentation including electrical schematics, control panel designs, and technical manuals
Provide on‑site support and commissioning of control systems
Lead project management tasks such as execution plans, work breakdowns, budget tracking, scheduling, and team coordination
Ensure compliance with engineering standards, NEC requirements, and client specifications
Mentor junior engineers and serve as a technical subject matter expert
Act as a technical lead and/or project manager for projects up to $1M
Drive customer engagement, ensuring repeat business through high‑quality delivery
Proficiencies
PLC, HMI, and SCADA platforms (Rockwell, Siemens, Modicon, ICONICS, Wonderware, GE CIMPLICITY, etc.)
Industrial networking and communication protocols
SQL, .NET, APIs, Power BI, and Grafana for data visualization and integration
Electrical schematic design (AutoCAD preferred)
Team leadership, mentoring, and technical oversight
Industrial applications in semiconductor, life sciences, food and beverage, oil & gas, and building automation
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science
10+ years of experience in controls engineering
Experience designing and commissioning automation systems
Proven experience with field equipment troubleshooting and job estimation
Ability to manage engineering teams and serve in a leadership role
Strong communication and documentation skills
Experience with electrical design under 480VAC preferred
References from a subordinate, peer, and manager strongly preferred
