This position is a restricted position subject to funding availability. Primary objective: The Assistant Director of Orientation and Transition Programs assists in fostering campus life through the development and implementation of intentional transitional programming tailored to meet the needs of Christopher Newport University students. Reports to the Associate Director of Orientation and Student Involvement and will develop, execute, and assess programs that provide enriching transitional experiences, engage students, and enhance student development. Responsibilities

Contributes to the long-term vision for orientation and transition initiatives within Student Affairs. Supervises two Coordinators and directs the recruitment, selection, and training of the Student Directors of Orientation and Crew Leaders. Coordinates the planning, implementation, and evaluation of university orientation programs, including Setting Sail, Changing Tides, and Welcome Week. Manages the year-long communication plan for incoming students, including the design and operations of the Admitted Student System (VisualZen), website updates, Captain’s Connect (Raftr), social media, email, phone, and texting communications, and other platforms established by the department. Creates engagement opportunities for undergraduate students, with a focus on first-year, second-year students and graduating seniors; aims to provide inclusive offerings for a diverse student body. Oversees programming to increase sense of belonging for all Christopher Newport University students. Assumes responsibility for task forces, committees, and/or programs as part of department leadership. Assists with departmental research and assessment efforts, including student satisfaction, learning outcomes, and service delivery evaluation; contributes to regular departmental reports. Works with administrative units across Student Affairs, Enrollment and Student Success, Admission, Auxiliary Services, and personnel involved in student success on retention initiatives. Collaborates with colleagues on individual student issues and supports broad departmental initiatives. In consultation with the Director, negotiates and executes contracts for activities and speakers on campus in line with orientation and campus life initiatives. Supports major office events and initiatives (e.g., Student Leadership Awards, Senior Recognition, Homecoming, RSO training, Recruitment, and the Involvement Fair); may require night or weekend participation. Participates in university events such as Commencement, Move-In, and special Presidential Events; contributes to mission of Student Affairs; may involve night/weekend work. Promotes a customer service approach to support the “students first” initiative and maintains professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees; upholds CNU Traditions and the “Students First” value. Adheres to workplace safety regulations and ensures staff are trained in safety procedures; reports unsafe conditions and incidents promptly. Acts as a designated responsible employee and Campus Security Authority with duties related to reporting and safety training. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's)

Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s degree with experience that equates to an advanced degree. Additional Consideration - Education

Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs Administration, Student Personnel Development, or related field. Experience Required

Professional experience beyond post-graduate level. Experience in developing, planning, and executing programs. Experience collaborating with various constituents. Additional Consideration - Experience

Professional experience with orientation and student transition initiatives in a university setting. Customer service experience with a diverse population of constituents. Experience advising students and managing personnel and departmental resources. Experience developing, implementing and evaluating assessment measures. Salary Information
