Under the general direction of the Shelter Director, with some latitude for independent action and decision making, the Assistant Director/ Shelter Operations at the Bronx Boulevard Men’s Shelter is responsible for the day to day management of the functions affecting the health and safety of the clients as well the interior and exterior conditions of the premises; provides supervision to the support staff assisting clients in their daily life skills activities; performs related work.
Program Description Ana’s Place is a 108 bed 24/7 emergency shelter for homeless men diagnosed with mental illness and/or substance abuse. Our comprehensive services include case management, individual and group counseling, recreational activities and housing placement assistance. Additionally, psychiatric services are provided Monday through Friday, staffed by a psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, and a licensed practical nurse.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities The essential duties of the Assistant Director/ Shelter Operations include but are not limited to the following activities:
Supervises the day to day activities in the shelter to assist clients in their daily routine and to provide a clean, safe and secure environment for both clients and staff. Conducts daily site tours to ensure conditions meet established standards and initiates corrective action as needed.
Following review of an occurrence by the Shelter Director, prepares a written Incident Report to be submitted to staff in Project Renewal or the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) per priority codes. For Priority 1 incidents, provides verbal notifications to designated staff within established timeframes.
Works collaboratively with maintenance staff to ensure repairs and special cleanings are completed prior to bi-annual inspections conducted by the Coalition for the Homeless.
Provides direct supervision to the Residential and Program Aide staff to ensure adequate staffing, service delivery to clients, adherence to security protocols, and accurate event logging.
Works with the Clinical Director to oversee the program activities of Recreation Therapists.
Manages personnel staffing for Residential and Program Aides, including hiring recommendations, staff training, performance monitoring, and, as needed, administrative actions including recommendations for termination.
Facilitates monthly resident house meetings.
Acts as a liaison between the shelter and city/state agencies (e.g., FDNY, Facility Maintenance and Development (FMD) of DHS, OTDA). Coordinates inspections with these jurisdictions.
Ensures staff have current certifications and credentials for Fire Safety, CPR, and First Aid; updates tracking and reminds staff when re-certifications are due.
Assumes responsibilities of the Shelter Director in her absence.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Shelter Director.
Available to respond to emergencies on a 24/7/365 basis, especially after normal work hours and on weekends.
Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and a minimum of one year of experience supervising the delivery of services to homeless individuals in a shelter environment
Two years of college, and a minimum of three years of experience working in a shelter environment; one year of the required experience must be in a supervisory capacity.
Must be able to walk the interior and exterior of the building to inspect conditions and move between floors (including climbing stairs if the elevator is out of order).
Fire Safety Coordinator F-80 and CPR certification.
Ability to motivate administrative and program staff to work cooperatively to achieve program goals and objectives.
Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate with all levels of staff, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of case management software and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
