Job Summary Competent Clinician. Possesses knowledge and skill to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as specified in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Experienced, knowledgeable and skilled in the specialty area. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Practice is predominantly interdependent in decision-making, patient-centered and focused on problem-solving. Manages unexpected or emergency situations commonly seen in the assigned specialty population. Serves as a resource for Nurse Clinician I or II. Provides patient care based on the American Nurses Association Standards of Professional Practice and Professional Performance. Supports specialty unit, nursing, and institutional strategic initiatives and health system goals.

Required Education & Experience

RN with two years of clinical RN experience.

Must possess and maintain a current license or valid permit to practice in Texas.

Current BLS required.

Essential Job Functions Professional Practice

Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents the daily care of assigned patients.

Identifies nursing diagnoses/patient care needs; develops and revises the care plan as needed.

Executes physician orders; administers medications and treatments with culturally congruent and competent nursing care in accordance with UTMB policies, procedures, and standards.

Performs routine technical procedures/skills in the specialty area assigned.

Patient/Family Teaching & Health Promotion

Provides basic patient/family instruction and healthcare teaching based on identified learning needs.

Identifies potential impact of family dynamics.

Uses evidence-based resources to provide patient/family education and Teach-Back to determine effectiveness.

Care Coordination & Delegation

Plans, coordinates, and prioritizes patient care activities according to skill level and work complexity.

Maintains safety and continuity of care using bedside shift report, hand-off tools/processes, and interdisciplinary rounding.

Demonstrates effective time management and delegates appropriately, seeking guidance when needed.

Demonstrates competent use of technology in the delivery of patient care.

Professional Performance Ethics, Advocacy & Culturally Congruent Care

Identifies ethical situations and seeks assistance to resolve when necessary.

Delivers culturally sensitive care using available resources to meet patient/family needs; acts as a patient advocate when needed.

Communication & Collaboration

Supports a healthy work environment through respectful communication; seeks assistance for challenging communication.

Plans and coordinates patient care activities in collaboration with an inter-professional team.

Leadership

Recognizes informal and formal leaders and educates colleagues about unit/hospital leadership when appropriate.

Understands unit, nursing, and institutional strategic initiatives and health system goals.

Promotes fiscal responsibility to support patient, unit, and organizational financial health.

Education, Evidence-Based Practice & Research

Attends meetings and supports unit/organization goals.

Participates in unit-based quality improvement activities and journals or evidence-based practice projects as required.

Pursues lifelong learning and demonstrates ability to adopt change by seeking needed information.

Quality, Resources & Safety

Identifies patient safety concerns and addresses immediate safety needs.

Engages in unit quality metrics and improvement activities; supports health system goals.

Maintains personal well-being and safety; adheres to infection control practices and proper documentation.

General Requirements

Completes required specialty-specific Competency Based Orientation (CBO) tools by the initial performance evaluation due date.

Participates in ongoing self-evaluation of competency using CBO tools and e-performance nursing appraisal.

Completes annual self-evaluation on time for competency and performance evaluation.

Performs and reports point of care testing (POCT).

Prioritizes and organizes work to complete assignments within required timeframes.

Maintains a clean, safe environment and adheres to aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.

Practices basic cost containment for patients and the unit.

Maintains accurate, concise, and legible documentation for all patient, unit, and hospital records.

Utilizes electronic forms of communication and documentation.

Meets periodic UTMB and unit-specific compliance requirements for health screening, training, attendance, safety, and CPR.

Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Compensation and Benefits Salary commensurate with experience.
