Mission It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.

Job Purpose Work under general supervision of the Director of Public Safety while enhancing the safety, security and operational mission of the agency.

Job Responsibilities

Coordinate routine and/or pre-scheduled searches and shakedowns of youth and visitors within correctional institution living areas or grounds.

Conduct routine institutional searches, shakedowns, strip searches (for cause), frisk searches of youth, and maintain presence at institutional entry gates.

Serve as the Interstate Compact for Juveniles (ICJ) transport internal liaison involved in the Agency’s interstate movement of youths under court supervision or who have run away to another state.

Provide transportation supervision and return of juveniles who are on probation, parole, or other supervision, or who have escaped to another state; or have run away from home.

Patrol to prevent crime and detect violations of law; respond to complaints and requests for law enforcement assistance.

Perform general police work such as maintaining order during emergencies, participating in special operations and directed patrols.

Testify in court and other legal proceedings; prosecute defendants in magistrate's court; keep records and reports of activities.

Enforce SC traffic laws; apprehend violators and escapees; investigate alleged or suspected violations of criminal law; interview witnesses and suspects.

Direct traffic, investigate traffic collisions, and control crowds.

Assist the Community Service Division on site visits with disruptive and violent juveniles; prepare written reports; communicate institutional matters effectively.

Draft, write and/or dictate clear, concise reports of contraband findings and prepare shift reports for dissemination.

Attend training and maintain certification required by the Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) and Agency policy.

Perform other duties deemed necessary by a supervisor to support the mission and needs of the agency.

Minimum and Additional Requirements STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.

Special Requirement

Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with ? 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.

Additional Requirements

Ability to meet and maintain certification by the Continuing Law Enforce Education (CLEE). Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to prepare reports. Ability to prioritize multiple competing priorities during high-stress situations. Perform general police work such as maintaining order during emergencies, participating in vehicle and employee searches, be on alert for suspicious activities, drugs, theft, contraband, and juvenile abuse. Patrol assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law. Respond to complaints, reports of violations and request for assistance; investigate traffic collisions. Escort unruly visitors off campus; perform emergency and routine juvenile transport. Provide a safe environment for the juvenile(s), visitor(s) and employee(s) of DJJ.

Essential Position:

Candidate should possess high moral character, be stable, and able to withstand a background investigation. Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent juveniles daily in accordance with SCDJJ Policies and Procedures. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs., sit 1-3 hours per day, stand 1-3 hours per day, walk 1-3 hours per day and work varied hours to meet organizational needs. Must be able to handle confidential and sensitive information and occasionally travel overnight.

This position involves duties related to custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the DJJ jurisdiction. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or equivalent. South Carolina Class One, Law Enforcement Certification, minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement experience or related experience (e.g., military service), minimum three (3) years supervisory progressive leadership experience. Must successfully complete a psychological evaluation and possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
