Description of Work The Academic Advisor in the Department of Chemistry of the College of Natural Sciences is a full-time 12-month Administrative Professional position. This role requires in-person work during regular business hours, Monday through Friday. The Department teaches 30,000 student credit hours per year and advises students from every college, including roughly 300 chemistry minors.
The Academic Advisor strengthens departmental efforts to provide quality advising and undergraduate student success through an innovative and holistic approach to guidance, resources, and support.
Primary Functions
Foster the successful transition of the student to the university environment
Encourage major and career exploration to ensure the chemistry major fits the student’s interests
Foster student engagement with faculty
Promote timely graduation
The Academic Advisor supplements faculty-student mentoring and supports new students (first-year and transfers) through frequent interactions in the initial semesters and connects students to faculty mentors and relevant resources to achieve timely graduation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Advise students on curriculum, course offerings, and degree progress; engage with faculty as needed
Complete administrative advising tasks for psychology students to monitor progress toward degree attainment
Hold full-service advising sessions throughout the year and at student orientation
Develop graduation plans, discuss study abroad, field placement, research/teaching opportunities, career counseling, and campus services
Provide guidance regarding institutional policies and act as an advocate for students within the department and university
Maintain accessible and timely information for students via social media, online platforms, and other resources
Collaborate with front office staff to deliver consistent and accurate messages
Coordinate student-facing resource materials and maintain advising publications and check sheets
Respond to department and campus email in a timely fashion
Develop understanding of student populations and tailor advising approaches accordingly
Support student success initiatives and contribute new ideas to the advising group
Develop knowledge of chemistry topics and assist with overrides/overloads in ARIES system
Maintain up-to-date student records and advising notes (EAB/Navigate) and other systems
Time Allocation
70%: Academic Advising and related duties
10%: Direct retention activities and first-year/transfer student engagement
10%: Recruitment/Orientation duties
5%: Assessment and reporting
5%: Campus collaboration/administration and service
Required Job Qualifications
Master’s degree (completed by June 1, 2026) OR Bachelor’s degree with two years post-bachelor professional experience
Professional experience in higher education or high school setting providing one-on-one and group guidance to support academic success and graduation
Preferred Job Qualifications
Master’s degree in natural sciences, college student personnel, higher education, communications, social work, sociology, psychology, or related field
Experience in the chemical sciences
Experience mentoring and advising college students
Understanding of student development and transition issues in higher education
Ability to work with a wide range of individuals and groups
Experience coordinating with campus organizations and departments in academic and student affairs
Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, presentation, writing, and technical/computer)
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and campus data/communication systems
Essential Duties
