Position Overview: The WHSP Phlebotomy Specialist plays a vital role in the healthcare team by ensuring the accurate collection and preparation of blood and other specimens for clinical and research testing. This position, situated in a women-focused and elite athlete healthcare environment, prioritizes patient comfort and safety while contributing to health, sports performance, and scientific initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures with professionalism, compassion, and precision.
- Collect blood samples for clinical diagnostics and research studies, adhering strictly to protocol-specific procedures.
- Identify patients using two approved identifiers according to established policies.
- Monitor patients during and after blood collection, ensuring their comfort and safety while being vigilant for any adverse reactions.
- Select and prepare the appropriate collection tubes, containers, labels, and documentation for each specimen.
- Maintain current knowledge of test requirements including special handling, temperature control, light sensitivity, and specific collection criteria.
- Prepare specimens for transport to reference laboratories, ensuring a secure chain of custody and timely processing.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, providers, and research staff regarding specimen needs and collection procedures.
- Accurately enter data into electronic health records (EHR) and research databases.
- Uphold strict infection control and safety standards in accordance with OSHA and institutional protocols.
- Maintain an organized inventory of phlebotomy supplies and ensure all equipment is clean and functional.
- Facilitate a welcoming clinic environment that supports a positive patient experience.
- Engage in quality improvement and continuing education relevant to phlebotomy, women's health, and athlete monitoring.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
- National phlebotomy certification (e.g., ASCP, NHA, or equivalent) is preferred.
- Current BLS certification is required.
- At least one year of phlebotomy experience is preferred, particularly in clinical or research settings.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent manual dexterity and meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy and professionalism in high-stress situations.
- Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.
- Comfortable working with athletes of various age groups from pediatric to geriatric, including recreational to elite levels.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
Work Environment:
- Frequent standing and walking; ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Fast-paced clinical setting emphasizing innovation, collaboration, and research.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand throughout the day.
