This position is located in Pueblo and supports engineers in materials testing, construction inspection, and field data collection. You'\'ll get certified to perform industry standard testing procedures and use specialized equipment to take measurements, analyze samples, and record results. The role ensures contractors\' work complies with approved plans, specifications, and construction requirements. This position is ideal for candidates with strong attention to detail and an interest in engineering and quality control.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the sampling and analytical laboratory testing of materials incorporated on assigned, multiple construction projects. Collect test materials, run appropriate tests, and conduct analyses. Report any abnormal results to the project engineer.
  • Schedule and perform the materials sampling and testing at laboratory facilities located in the field to assure that materials placed on construction projects are in conformance with contract specifications and industry standards.
  • Acquire and maintain certifications in: LabCAT, ACI (Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, Concrete Strength Testing Technician), WAQTC materials testing, and Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation.
  • Assist with monitoring consultants who perform the necessary testing for various projects.
  • Conduct inspection of construction methods, procedures, and materials utilized to assure that the final construction product meets all specifications and standards and is in conformance with engineering details.
  • Provide basic interpretation of plans and specifications for the contractor and refer contractor to project engineer for any corrective actions that need to be taken.
  • Measure, calculate, and document quantities of work performed by the contractor using measuring devices, calculators, and computers.
  • Provide office engineering support by checking project pay items documentation, posting quantities in computer database, checking contractor payrolls, recording contractor manpower and equipment, and monitoring daily traffic control.
  • Use established procedures to compile information acquired through site surveys and research efforts. This assists the creation of a complete set of plans for a highway construction project.
  • Use computer aided drafting programs, earthwork programs, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized design programs to organize the data for a construction project into a useful set of project plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Schedule is primarily 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday.
  • Approximately 85% of time spent in the field and 15% in the office.
  • Work days/hours may change depending on the project; night, holiday, and weekend work may be required during construction.
  • Travel within the state to project sites, training, meetings, and conferences is expected.
  • Operate CDOT vehicles as required and use appropriate personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Work in close proximity to heavy traffic and be willing and physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at elevations up to 12,000 feet.
  • Handling or exposure to hazardous materials including radioactivity and nuclear gauges.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following:
    • working in building or skilled trades (e.g. welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter)
    • assisting in the design of construction plans
    • monitoring construction projects
    • conducting materials testing
    • inspecting projects

Substitutions

  • Additional appropriate education in engineering, construction management, mathematics, or other relevant coursework will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. (Transcripts and NACES Reports are required)

Education Documentation

College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, provide a legible copy of official or unofficial college transcript(s) or an official foreign credential evaluation. Transcripts must show school name, completed credit hours, and degree conferred if applicable. Transcripts from outside the U.S. must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a NACES service. The credential evaluation report must be official. Failure to provide a transcript or official foreign credential evaluation may result in rejection.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include checks of Social Security number trace, criminal records, public court records, educational records, and driving records.
  • A current valid driver’s license is required for CDOT positions requiring a state or personal vehicle.
  • Within 2 years of hire, LabCAT, ACI, WAQTC materials testing, and Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation certifications are required and must be maintained.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in ACI A and B, WAQTC and CAPA.
  • Experience in designing engineering plans and specifications; working knowledge of engineering design standards.
  • Experience inspecting construction projects for compliance with plans and specifications; knowledge of materials testing processes and best practices.
  • Experience testing or assisting with testing of asphalt, concrete, soil, and aggregates; knowledge of AASHTO standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans; knowledge of MUTCD; experience on transportation projects.
  • Ability to research methods and test procedures; provide recommendations for acceptance, corrective work, or rejection of out-of-specification materials.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Google applications, SAP, MicroStation, Trns-Port, InRoads, and ability to learn new software quickly.
