University of Padova
PhD position, Impact of Anthropogenic Activities on Underwater Noise Pollution i
University of Padova, Italy, New York, United States
Offer Description
The Venetian Lagoon is a highly touristic and industrialized area that suffers from intense underwater noise pollution caused by human activity. This PhD project aims to quantitatively characterize the Lagoon’s
soundscape , leveraging modern approaches from
environmental seismology
and
machine learning . It will involve: Collecting continuous underwater acoustic records at multiple locations throughout the Lagoon (records several days long) Analyzing the frequency content and its temporal variability Identifying and characterizing individual anthropogenic events (e.g., taxi boats, large ships) using machine learning Conducting preliminary identification of marine species potentially affected by noise exposure We seek a motivated doctoral candidate with a strong interest in the quantitative study of environmental noise and its impact on the marine ecosystem. Preferred backgrounds include: physics, applied mathematics, engineering, seismology/geophysics, or physical acoustics. Applicants from biology or related fields with solid quantitative and programming skills are also welcome. Experience with signal analysis and/or machine learning will be considered a strong asset. The selected candidate will be supervised by Lapo Boschi and Jacopo Boaga at the department of Geosciences, University of Padua. Mobility rule : In accordance with MSCA eligibility requirements, candidates
must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months
in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date. This position is fully funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network SEASOUNDS (https://seasounds-dn.cnrs.fr/ ). The PhD candidate will be employed by the University of Padua and benefit from a competitive MSCA salary package: Monthly living allowance: 3,311 €/month Monthly mobility allowance: 600 €/month Monthly family allowance: 660 €/month (if applicable, depending on family situation) The MSCA Doctoral Network offers high-level training, international collaboration, and secondment opportunities across partner institutions (see network website for details). Applicants should send a CV, motivation letter, and contact information for one or two referees to: lapo.boschi@unipd.it Deadline: December 15, 2025 Start date: Early 2026.
