Overview ATTENTION ALL APPLICANTS! The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Bridge Design Section, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:

Engineering Assistant 1 – $34.42 / hourly; Engineering Assistant 2 – $39.67 / hourly; Engineering Assistant 3 – $45.35 / hourly.

What you will be doing The Bridge Engineering Assistant plays a hands-on role in managing and enhancing our state’s 1,077 bridges. You will be involved in a variety of tasks, from conducting bridge inspections and analyzing existing structures to designing new bridges and overseeing construction projects. Under the guidance of licensed engineers, you will perform structural analysis, calculations, and prepare detailed plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports. You will also create structural details, calculate quantities, and draft specifications for construction contracts. Your work will contribute directly to the safety and improvement of the State of Alaska\'s infrastructure.

A position in the Bridge Section offers hands-on professional experience with a team of engineers who prioritize safety and expertise in bridge engineering. The office has 25 staff members, providing a personal environment with broad knowledge across subdisciplines of bridge engineering.

The working environment This position is located in DOT&PF Headquarters in Juneau, with travel to all regions of Alaska for bridge inspections. The office environment is casual-professional, team-oriented, and friendly. Smaller aircraft and float planes may be required to reach remote bridge sites.

Juneau features a temperate rainforest environment with mountains, glaciers, and fjords, and offers abundant outdoor recreation and scenic beauty.

Who we are looking for We are seeking candidates with the following core competencies:

Structural Engineering : Knowledge of design and analysis of complex structures using various materials. Includes determinate or indeterminate systems.

Problem Solving : Identifies problems, assesses information accuracy and relevance, and uses judgment to evaluate alternatives and recommendations.

Written Communication : Clear, concise, organized, and persuasive writing for the intended audience.

Special Note:

A valid driver's license is required.

Engineer-in-Training (FE) certification is preferred but not essential.

Qualifications and eligibility Engineering Assistant 1 : Bachelor\'s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from ABET-accredited program; or non-ABET-accredited degree with either EIT/LSIT certification or verification of FE/FS exam passing. Applicants may qualify with a degree earned within nine months from ABET-accredited programs with conditional offers pending final degree proof.

Engineering Assistant 2 : ABET-accredited bachelor\'s degree in engineering/architecture/land surveying with one year of related experience as an Engineering Assistant 1, or non-ABET-accredited degree with EIT/LSIT or FE/FS, plus one year of related experience; or five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience with two years at Journey level. Special substitution: graduate study may substitute for required experience. The department will identify EIT positions. Transcripts may be requested at interview.

Engineering Assistant 3 : ABET-accredited bachelor\'s degree with two years of related experience (one year at working/ trainee level) or non-ABET degree with EIT certification plus two years of related experience. Substitutions: additional education or experience may replace portions of the degree requirement.

At time of application : Submit a Cover Letter (as instructed). At time of interview: provide FE exam results (if applicable), unofficial transcripts, a structural calculation sample, and three professional references.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED : The position is flexibly staffed at Engineering Assistant 1, 2, or 3. Starting salary will be determined by the level hired. Promotions to higher levels may occur after probation and training.
