Position Purpose The heating plant provides heating steam and co‑generates electricity on a 24‑hour basis for all of the College’s GPO and ORL buildings. The operator is responsible for the operation of the plant’s electrical generators, electrical distribution system, emergency diesel generator, turbine auxiliaries, and oversight of all plant equipment and systems including steam and electric flow. Responsibilities include responding to after‑hours telephone requests, maintaining the station log book, monitoring fire alarms, managing the computer energy management system, and alerting FO&M personnel to equipment malfunctions and emergencies.
Required Qualifications – Education and Experience
High school graduate with 5+ years of experience in power plant maintenance and boiler operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Five years of relevant power plant maintenance and boiler operations experience, or post‑secondary technical school degree in power plant operation.
Ability to pass an annual hearing test and willingness to participate in a hearing conservation program.
High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of high‑pressure steam boilers, turbine generators, and high‑voltage electrical distribution systems.
Successful completion of plant operator training guidelines.
Knowledge of facility operating permits and emissions limits to maintain compliance with federal and state regulations.
Computer‑literate and proficient in current methods of computer‑automated boiler control.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and communicate effectively with diverse College personnel.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and process flow diagrams.
Demonstrated sound judgment and good problem‑solving skills.
In good physical condition, able to perform strenuous physical labor under extreme high temperatures, and able to work on ladders.
Willingness to work shift hours as assigned and overtime when required.
Completion of hazard training: Hazardous Waste Storage and Handling; Spill Prevention Controls and Countermeasures; Driver Safety; Hazard Communication; Lock‑out/Tag‑out; Respirator Training, Fit, and Physical Examination; Working in Confined Spaces.
Responsibilities
Start, stop, and operate equipment according to proper procedures and safety guidelines.
Monitor overall plant operation using the Bailey Distributed Control System, local gauges, and panel meters.
Ensure facility compliance with operating permits, emissions limits, and operating procedures.
Respond to after‑hours telephone requests for assistance from College community members.
Monitor and report problems associated with the campus energy management computer and fire alarms.
Maintain a regular cleaning station as assigned and perform basic maintenance tasks such as replacing status indicator lights.
Maintain turbine room log and record events in the station log book.
Record all relay trips during electrical outages for review by supervisory personnel.
Routinely inspect equipment and write work orders for items needing repair.
Working Conditions
Work from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms.
Require bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and working in cramped or awkward positions.
Regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects up to 70 lb.
Performed indoors, outdoors, in bad weather, and in areas that are dirty, smoky or with fumes and steam.
Exposure to extreme high temperatures and noise levels.
Wear protective clothing such as overalls, gloves, goggles, ear plugs, and hard hat.
May require protective clothing and breathing apparatus under conditions of extreme heat, fumes, or thick smoke.
Exposure to high‑voltage electrical and high‑pressure steam and water.
