Position Overview
Petco is a category-defining health and wellness company focused on improving the lives of pets, pet parents and Petco partners. The General Manager leads through Petco’s vision of “Healthier Pets. The GM is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center and drives the business through people, performance and process excellence. Responsibilities
Lead a team of Pet Care Center managers, leaders and partners, ensuring each operates in alignment with Petco standards. Develop and execute a strategy to achieve sales growth, profitability and operational excellence. Recruit, hire and retain a diverse, high‑potential team, providing coaching, development and performance management. Maintain a professional, safe and welcoming environment that encourages partner growth and guest satisfaction. Ensure guest service excellence, sharing product knowledge and proactively meeting customer needs. Monitor labor, payroll and inventory to maximize productivity and profitability. Use financial and operational reporting to identify opportunities for improvement. Promote community engagement and brand awareness through events such as adoptions, school visits and local promotions. Oversee animal health, appearance, welfare and proper handling, ensuring all pets receive appropriate care. Maintain merchandise pricing, displays, stock levels and store appearance in accordance with operational standards. Implement safety, inventory control and loss prevention procedures to protect pets, merchandise and partners. Open and close the Pet Care Center in compliance with policies and procedures. People
Build and lead a team that embodies the Petco brand, delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty. Attract, hire and retain top talent, fostering a culture of teamwork, inclusion and collaboration. Train, coach and develop leaders and hourly partners, ensuring they run the store efficiently to Petco standards. Create a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement. Provide clear direction, establish priorities and communicate effectively. Ensure prompt and courteous service to all guests, helping partners determine needs and suggesting appropriate solutions. Manage partner performance and support continuous improvement. Performance
Meet or exceed goals related to sales, profitability and operational excellence. Schedule and adjust labor hours and payroll to achieve productivity and sales targets. Review and interpret financial and operational reporting, including store visits and audit results. Develop strategies to improve underperforming metrics using Petco programs, tools and resources. Market the Pet Care Center and its products, overseeing planning of on‑site events and community promotions. Process
Ensure proper health, appearance, welfare and handling of all animals. Price, display and stock merchandise appropriately, adjusting as needed to meet store objectives. Substantiate accounting, inventory management and payroll paperwork timely. Maintain the store’s appearance in accordance with Petco operational standards and safety procedures. Implement workplace safety, inventory control and loss prevention procedures. Ensure the store is opened/closed in accordance with policies and procedures. Other Essential Duties
Model leadership and selling behaviors, providing proactive leadership that motivates teams. Prioritize safety, ensuring all policies and procedures are observed and new policies are implemented. Foster a collaborative culture that encourages partners to generate ideas and improve guest engagement. Prioritize talent development, maintaining a strong bench strength through training and recruitment. Engage with partners to maintain high standards and a positive working environment. Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED required, with proficiency in business, finance, analysis and problem‑solving. Excellent communication and computer skills required. Three or more years of management experience preferred, with prior retail management experience desirable. A strong ability to demonstrate customer service, instruction, and genuine interest in animals. Valid driver’s license required; completion of Petco Management Achievement Program modules may be required for internal candidates. Supervisory Responsibility
Directly supervises a team of leaders and is responsible for all Pet Care Center partners, including services. Work Environment
Job duties are conducted indoors, requiring occasional merchandise stocking, customer carry‑outs and bank deposits. The role involves bending, kneeling, moving merchandise up to 50 lb and standing for extended periods. Limited travel may be required. Contacts
