Our Opportunity We are currently seeking a
Managing Scientist
with a focus in
Water Resources, Agricultural, or Nutrient Management
for our
Ecological and Biological Sciences
Practice in our Washington, DC office. Position locations in Alexandria, VA; Bellevue, WA; Philadelphia, PA; Menlo Park, CA; or Pasadena, CA will also be considered. In this role you will work as part of a team to provide technical support on existing projects and business development efforts.
Responsibilities
Strategic business development and client networking to grow a broad range of science and engineering technical services globally in the water resources, agricultural, and nutrient management arena.
Understanding and interpreting water resources and land‑use activities focusing on environmental issues including agricultural and nutrient management.
Demonstrated understanding of relevant federal and state government regulations, environmental monitoring, site infrastructure, and production processes.
Directing and supporting the conduct of analyses and preparing regulatory documents and expert reports.
Synthesizing technical information and applying creative and critical thinking to prepare and review reports and technical presentations.
Developing and maintaining professional status by authoring peer‑reviewed publications and participating in technical conferences and activities of professional societies.
Working cooperatively on projects with other members of the Ecological and Biological Sciences Practice and interdisciplinary groups from other Exponent practices as appropriate.
Skills and Qualifications
Ph.D. in Water Resources, Ecology, Agricultural Science, Engineering, or another related field.
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience, with at least 3 years of direct consulting experience.
Expert level knowledge of various land‑use activities including agricultural science, soil science, crop and livestock management, water resources including irrigation practices, pest management, and nutrient management.
Working knowledge of farming practices with a strong understanding of scientific sampling methodologies and the state‑of‑science on a broad range of terrestrial, wildlife, soil, and water quality issues.
Proven experience with data analysis and statistics.
Proven experience managing tasks of moderate scope and complexity.
Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects and tasks with competing deadlines, and communicate within multidisciplinary teams.
Demonstrated ability in written and oral communications.
Strong commitment to personal development and the development of staff.
Not required but any of the following experience would be a plus:
Understanding of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to agriculture, water quality, and related environmental sciences including USDA, ESA, NEPA, and Clean Water Act in the U.S. and similar laws and regulations in other countries.
Experience in addressing domestic animals including cattle, swine, fowl, and aquaculture.
Experience in addressing both proactive and litigation‑related matters.

Compensation Our consultants are rewarded for their technical and business contributions and have an opportunity to plan for future success and career growth. Exponent’s total compensation plan includes base salary, annual bonus, and a 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary.
The base salary range for this position is dependent on experience and capabilities and will be assessed during the interview process.
