Job Summary This role will assist the Transmission Leads by providing detailed cold-eye reviews of their team’s projects or specific details within such projects. The individual will drive consistency in the product deliverables across both internal and external design groups and assist with providing technical insight to the rest of the design team. They will personally take on unique/one-off type of projects or larger more complicated projects themselves or coordinate such projects with external design firms as needed. Other design responsibilities may include regulator station design, public works relocations, pressure improvements, system renewal projects and meter set designs. This is a shared service provider role focused upon coordinating engineering, new business and construction activities for optimal design, execution and reporting as well as providing engineering support for assigned service center areas.
This position may be filled at Senior Engineer (Level 6) or Principal Engineer (Level 7). Individuals who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education, and certifications may be eligible for the more advanced positions.
Functional Expertise
Trains and mentors less senior engineers and technicians; provides technical direction to team members.
Oversees and approves designs by performing systematic reviews of work and answering questions on difficult issues.
Works with Engineering Manager to prepare project prioritization lists used in the annual capital budgeting process.
Directs less senior engineers and technicians in preparing designs, proposals, graphs, planning layouts and summaries designed to communicate project plans, progress or results.
Serves as project manager; assists in determining project objectives on the development of a comprehensive project design, outlines project requirements, assigns tasks, coordinates project activities with other operating units to facilitate participation of appropriate staff on project, and supervises progress to ensure objectives are met.
Develops design options or recommendations to improve system optimization and assesses feasibility of engineering solutions.
Business Acumen
Reviews engineering designs to provide for the most cost‑effective long‑term solution for the project scope.
Applies knowledge of pipeline design, station design, meters, regulators, heaters, odorizers, SCADA and relief valves and procedures for sizing any of the aforementioned.
Proficient at applying codes and standards as they apply to natural gas engineering. Codes include DOT 192 and the Operations Procedure Manual.
Engagement
Collaborates with construction management, operations managers and technical services to produce effective designs in a timely manner.
Anticipates and identifies issues that put projects at risk and then implements corrective actions to mitigate such risks.
Driving Results
Identifies and resolves obstacles that could delay a project.
Provides technical guidance for less senior staff.
Tracks projects from concept through construction. Responsible for accounting for budget variances and reporting monthly metrics for the group to the Engineering Manager.
Education and Experience (Level 7)
BS in recognized engineering specialty from an ABET accredited institution.
10+ years of gas engineering or operations experience.
Engineering background with knowledge of gas engineering principles and theories, operation of gas distribution systems, and financial and statistical analysis.
Knowledge of DOT pipeline safety regulations.
Or equivalent academic education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineering (PE) License.
Certified Project Manager.
Specific Skills & Knowledge (Level 7) Required
Good technical and computer skills.
Acting with a sense of urgency.
Strong leadership skills.
Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization.
CAD/GIS – basic proficiency.
MS Office – basic proficiency.
Preferred
MS Project or Primavera.
SynerGEE experience.
AutoCAD or MicroStation experience.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
The incumbent works in an office environment.
The incumbent may/will work near or with moving mechanical parts.
The incumbent may/will be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals.
The incumbent may/will be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions.
The incumbent may/will be exposed to excessive noise.
The incumbent may/will be exposed to construction related activities.
This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking.
This position occasionally requires the incumbent to reach above shoulder level.
This position occasionally requires the incumbent to bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Local travel.
Occasional overnight travel.
