Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonographer Specialty Job Responsibilities
Communicates effectively with the patient to obtain clinical maternal?fetal history and informed consent from the patient or patient's chart to assist the physician in optimizing the performance and interpretation of the examination. Explains the procedure to patients/families and answers any questions to ease anxiety and assure patient cooperation, as evidenced by customer satisfaction. Assists the physicians in performing CVS, Amniocentesis, and image optimization studies using departmental protocols to provide optimum results. Demonstrates knowledge of proper sterile techniques and isolation precautions as they pertain to the various specialty procedures. Recognizes clinical and/or emergent problems in maternal?fetal patients that may interfere with exams and takes appropriate action to resolve them and produce the most desirable outcome. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of IV heparin locks and central line usage as they pertain to sonography, as evidenced by observations by supervisor and peers. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of maternal?fetal ultrasound principles and theory pertaining to the specialized area. Utilizes fetal anatomical knowledge to position patients to optimize image quality during examination while still providing for patient comfort and safety. Enhances the procedure with additional modalities and views based on identified disease processes and fetal anomalies. Accurately measures maternal?fetal area structures and pathology to further determine the direction of the exam and identify fetal anomalies. Provides clinical services according to specialized maternal?fetal ultrasound practice standards to detect fetal anomalies and acts as a resource to students, nurses, fellows and other technologists, to ensure optimal department functions. Obtains and evaluates color flow and Doppler waveforms using this information to determine if further evaluation is needed. Records all data, images and technical notes that provide the preliminary report to facilitate the physician's ability to interpret the information. Correctly identifies patients and their files ensuring a high degree of accuracy, tracking patients according to department procedures, and taking immediate action for corrections.
Minimum Qualifications
Certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) upon start; Successful completion of the Inova Nuchal Translucency (NT) Program is required within 6 months for team members without the Nuchal Translucency Certification. Licensure - None required. Experience - Two years of hospital or doctor's office?based experience in the performance of specialized maternal?fetal sonography detecting fetal anomalies. Education - High School diploma or equivalent; Degree from Accredited Sonography Training Program.
