Job Description Safety Data Program Specialist (25142401)

The Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting for a Safety Data Program Specialist. This role provides critical support to MDT’s Safety Program including the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). The position involves data management to maintain MDT’s crash database with the Safety Information Management System (AASHTOWare). Responsibilities include working with multiple software programs, coordinating with several groups within MDT and the Montana Highway Patrol (MHP), serving as the Section lead Arc Map user and AASHTOWare Safety administrator, and training staff on safety‑related software.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience)

Associate degree in Drafting, Programming or related fields (four years related experience may substitute)

Minimum of 1 year of experience using ArcGIS

GIS Certification is preferred

Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of engineering principles used in road design such as terminology, drafting symbols and abbreviations (preferred)

Knowledge of developing queries to quality‑control related data elements and ability to extract data effectively from the database

Knowledge of PL/SQL Developer, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Products and Adobe

Ability to learn new programs specific to this Section, e.g., AASHTOWare Safety (MDT crash database) and SmartCad (Montana Department of Justice SmartCop)

Other Information The successful candidate must pass a fingerprint‑based background investigation as a condition of employment. Driver’s record will be verified. Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form authorizing the Department to obtain the applicant’s permanent driving records. Compliance with state vehicle use policies and MDT policy #6.03.001 are conditions of employment.
