Assistant Corporation Counsel I – Legal Information & Prosecutions Division
The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel ("ACC") I in the Legal Information and Prosecutions ("LIP") Division.
Responsibilities
Prosecute Chicago Municipal Code violations in Cook County Circuit Court, Traffic Court, Branch Courts, and handle cases at the City’s Department of Administrative Hearings.
Defend administrative decisions from the City’s Department of Administrative Hearings filed as administrative appeals in Circuit Court.
Represent the City in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) matters, document production, electronic discovery (e‑discovery), and Local Records Act (LRA) matters.
Work under the general supervision of the Division’s supervisors, chief, and deputy; try cases, conduct hearings, research and write motions, memoranda, and briefs; litigate administrative appeals; argue motions; engage in settlement negotiations; collaborate with client departments; review and analyze files in a variety of cases; and recommend appropriate courses of action.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Superior writing, research, and editing skills.
Superior communication skills (written and verbal).
Experience counseling and advising clients.
Experience in administrative proceedings or Circuit Court courtroom.
Ability to work well with others.
Demonstrated use of sound judgment.
Initiative on assigned tasks.
Ability to organize, prioritize, monitor, and control workflow deadlines.
Qualifications
Graduation from an ABA‑accredited law school with a J.D. degree.
Admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligibility for admission on motion under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705).
Good standing with the state Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission.
