DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW Risk and Safety Services (RSS) is a multi-operational unit within the Finance and Operations Administration Division of the University of California, Santa Cruz. RSS delivers programs and services to support campus-wide safety and emergency response for incident management. Departments include Risk Services, Environmental Health and Safety, Office of Emergency Services, Transportation and Parking Services, and University Police. More information: https://police.ucsc.edu
JOB SUMMARY Police Officers are the primary representatives of the University of California Police Department, responsible for the delivery of public safety and law enforcement services on and near the campus and other properties owned, controlled, or occupied by the University. Officers work under supervision and independently as needed. They engage in preventative patrols, respond to calls, make arrests, conduct investigations, testify in court, and manage custody of evidence and property. They may work with civilian and other law enforcement agencies to provide security for ceremonies and events. The incumbent demonstrates knowledge of modern police methods, teamwork, interpersonal skills, and commitment to diversity and community-oriented policing. Officers may work evening, night, and weekend shifts and may be required to work mandatory overtime, attend off-site training, and provide mutual aid as needed.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary:
$47.84 - $52.55/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University is required to post a reasonable estimate of compensation. The salary posted is the budgeted amount and should not be exceeded.

JOB DUTIES 60% - Core Function: Patrol and Investigation
Respond to calls related to protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and emergencies; manage stress effectively.
Initiate police action when necessary; use authority fairly and equitably.
Prevent and suppress crime; de-escalate situations; manage conflict.
Make arrests, search, fingerprint, and transport prisoners.
Conduct missing person investigations; preliminary and follow-up investigations.
Enforce laws and University regulations; preserve evidence and property.
Interview victims, witnesses, suspects; check buildings for security and safety issues.
Direct traffic; write citations; prepare reports; develop patrol plans.
Serve warrants and subpoenas; comply with policies and procedures; analyze situations and act quickly under time constraints.
Adhere to laws and policies; maintain confidentiality; apply crowd management and Incident Command System.
15% - Core Function: Training/Liaison/Court Testimony
Participate in on-the-job training and CA-POST mandated courses; maintain POST certifications.
Present and prepare cases for court; testify as required.
Liaise with other agencies; coordinate resources; mentor others.
15% - Core Function: Community Outreach Services
Train department members and the community; engage with public and University units to identify and solve problems.
Deliver community relations presentations; build trust with the campus community.
Provide information on crime prevention and public safety topics.
5% - Core Function: Administrative Duties
Maintain logs; complete evaluations; research and write reports; investigate campus code violations.
5% - Core Function: Other Duties as Assigned
Special assignments and mutual aid; uphold UCSC principles of community; follow orders and department policies.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/ or experience.
Graduate of POST Basic Police Academy.
Ability to analyze situations and act quickly to prevent harm.
Proficiency with weapons; maintain PC 832 Arrest qualifications.
Knowledge of police operating rules and basic law enforcement terminology.
Experience in defensive tactics; ability to operate vehicles in high-speed/emergency conditions.
Knowledge of pertinent case law; ability to use police technologies.
Excellent written and verbal communication; teamwork and public service mindset.
POST standards compliance and ability to follow chain of command.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Selected candidate must complete pre-hire background checks, medical/psychological examinations, TB test, CPR/First Aid/AED, and other requirements as listed. Must possess a valid California driver license and may be required to drive; DMV record may be requested. Must be at least 21 years old and a U.S. citizen with a high school diploma or GED. Post requirements include ongoing training and compliance with CANRA and Clery Act responsibilities.
