The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non-residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS is the agency statutorily mandated to provide for the care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates fifteen secure facilities serving youth ages 10–21 who are pre-adjudicated, sentenced, or committed. The Division also contracts with private service providers. For pre-adjudicated youth, DYS oversees the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum. DYS administers juvenile parole services throughout the State. This position provides 24/7 supervision of youth in DYS State Operated Secure Facilities. It is direct-care and essential, focusing on safety and security, organization of daily living and leisure activities per the living unit master schedule, and adherence to supervisory direction. The role uses a trauma-responsive approach to provide corrective cognitive, emotional, or behavioral experiences. It requires awareness of applicable legal standards, CDHS/DYS policies, audit standards, and Youth Center procedures. The role serves a complex adolescent population with behavioral health disorders, trauma, and criminal behaviors, and functions as a Lead Worker with partial accountability for the work product of CYSOs. Professional boundaries must be maintained according to Policy S-3-30 (Professional Conduct) and Policy S-3-20 (Relationships Between Employees and Youth). Duties
Safety/Security
Provide direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated/pre-adjudicated youth in a locked setting. Enforce security rules, supervise activities, orient youth to unit rules, and intervene early in volatile situations. Provide immediate crisis intervention and use de-escalation skills; communicate effectively with youth and staff. Monitor movement, escort/transport youth, conduct searches in accordance with policy; ensure searches are performed by same-sex staff unless a transgender/intersex preference applies. Identify, document, and seize contraband; monitor securing systems and grounds to minimize escape risk; comply with Suicide Precaution Monitoring (SPM) policies. Oversee medical watches and behavioral/medical plans as directed; uphold PREA standards. Lead Worker Duties (as assigned)
Coaches, mentors, and models adherence to DYS policy; provides shift briefings. Oversees proper implementation of SPM, SMP, Seclusion, Behavior Contracts, and Safety Plans. Identifies milieu concerns and provides solutions to minimize threats; reviews and intervenes on Minor and Major Rule Violations; conducts disciplinary hearings as needed. Ensures safety, fire, sanitation standards; administers medications per QMAP standards; oversees after-hours medication receipt. Facilitates medical referrals and documentation; assigns staff to posts; participates in post-incident processes and follow-up; supports behavior management and safety planning. Oversees all juvenile transports; ensures meals are offered to all youth. Programming
Implement and monitor the facility behavioral management program; conduct psycho-educational groups; document behaviors and milieu requirements. Model pro-social behavior; build rapport; support restorative justice and DYS initiatives. Monitor program schedule, document SMP, provide orientation within 24 hours of admission, and support educational programming as requested. Provide individual or group psycho-education and ensure youth access to grievances, medical and mental health services. Documentation/Recording and Reporting
Document observations, searches, daily unit activities, SPM/SMP status, and medical documentation; generate incident reports and program documentation in TRAILS. Maintain youth room classifications, MAYSI-2/SIRS-R within required timeframes; notify receiving units of relevant information. Ensure all required forms are completed and accessible, and that abuse reporting requirements are met. Lead Worker Documentation (additional)
Review documentation to ensure adherence to policy and standards; manage youth movement records; review admissions documents and room classifications; verify NDR status and meal tracking. Organizational Accountability
Demonstrate a healthy, respectful cultural climate; communicate with outside agencies and staff professionally; adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct, DYS Core Values, and legal standards. Maintain work schedules, timekeeping, and duties as assigned; Lead Worker to role-model and coach staff. Training
Attend required training and maintain certifications; complete pre-service training and ongoing development; support behavior management strategies. Lead Worker duties include facilitating team meetings as needed. Other Duties as Assigned

Educational Requirements High school diploma or GED. Work Experience One (1) year of professional experience in a field related to the position. Corrections-related experience is defined as custody/control of youth and/or POST/Military law enforcement. Substitution: additional education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. College coursework in relevant fields may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis. Preferred Qualifications Admissions and Control trained Experience with adjudicated/detained youth in a secure facility Program/project development experience Self-motivated, positive role model, attention to detail Teamwork, trainer certification, supervisory/leadership experience Critical thinking and decision-making skills Google Suite proficiency Degree in social/behavioral sciences or related field Relevant state service experience Conditions of Employment
Full Background checks and clearances (CBI, fingerprint, ICON, etc.). Valid unrestricted U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years old with no felony convictions or domestic violence history. Shifts: 24/7 facility; travel for youth transport and trainings. Continued employment contingent on successful completion of DYS Pre-service Training Academy, Field Training Program, and annual trainings. Former State employees must disclose prior terminations/resignations and provide explanations and prior employee number if applicable.
