MI Healthy Climate Fellows: Join the MI Healthy Climate Fellows (MHC Fellows) and make a lasting impact on Michigan's carbon‑neutral future! The MHC Fellows program accelerates Michigan's climate action through capacity building and leadership development. Fellows serve across the state to advance the MI Healthy Climate Plan’s (MHCP) goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The plan, unveiled by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in April 2022, aims to avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis; create good‑paying jobs; position Michigan as a climate action leader; and build a healthier and more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable Michigan for all Michiganders.

About the Host Partner: Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity (KVHH) was founded in 1983 as part of the global Habitat for Humanity movement, guided by the belief that every person deserves a safe, decent, and affordable home. The mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Dedicated staff and volunteers pursue this mission by constructing energy‑efficient homes, providing essential repairs that allow individuals to remain safely in their homes, and strengthening connections among neighbors and partner families.

MHC Fellow Role and Responsibilities:

Conducting detailed cost breakdowns for all upcoming construction projects, including critical repairs, remodels, and new builds.

Researching funding opportunities and collaborating with the Green Home Institute to identify grants, rebates, and other financial incentives that support energy‑efficient and sustainable building practices.

Working with the Fund Development Director to secure funding aligned with our sustainability goals, including climate‑smart construction and carbon reduction initiatives.

Performing cost‑benefit analyses to determine which building strategies and upgrades will achieve the greatest reduction in carbon emissions (or equivalents) within available budgets.

Developing a decision‑making rubric to help assess and prioritize future projects based on environmental impact, cost‑effectiveness, and resource availability.

Creating a roadmap to guide the organization through emerging incentives and long‑term funding opportunities related to green building and climate resilience, while also providing outreach and sharing methods to help other Habitat affiliates and local organizations apply these insights and amplify climate impact across the broader community.

Empowering the community to access climate resources by planning meetings, educational programs, and/or other activities to consistently share information.

Participating in MHC Fellows development shared learning and collaboration activities including four MHC Fellow in‑person convenings and monthly virtual trainings (provided by program staff).

Hosting a community input session with their host site to collect community feedback and advance the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan.
