Senior Network Engineer (Sr NE) VDOT seeks an experienced Senior Network Engineer to implement and provide support to the agency’s IT Network infrastructure. The Senior NE performs day‑to‑day activities related to the support, documentation, research, analysis, and implementation of VDOT network‑related infrastructure.

Job Overview The role requires deep knowledge of network infrastructure, hands‑on troubleshooting, and collaboration with IT supply partners to ensure robust and secure connectivity.

Key Responsibilities

Significant knowledge and working experience with enterprise routers, switches, VPN concentrators, firewalls, wireless access points, and load balancers, including documentation, setup, configuration, upgrade, management, and troubleshooting.

Capability to troubleshoot network infrastructure issues.

Identify and diagnose system problems using line monitors, diagnostic software, and test equipment.

Work closely with agency IT infrastructure suppliers and stakeholders to gather accurate requirements, specifications, and configurations.

Assist in troubleshooting and resolving network issues affecting application performance and uptime.

Oversee installation, documentation, and upgrades of facility data network infrastructure.

Collaborate with cloud and DevSecOps teams to optimize hybrid connectivity and SDWAN configurations.

Create and maintain documentation, network architecture diagrams, IP schemes, firewall rules, and access controls as needed.

Work independently on assigned projects.

Possess industry‑standard networking certification (e.g., Cisco CCNA, Juniper JNCIA) or equivalent.

Requirements

At least 8 years of experience with enterprise routers, switches, VPN concentrators, firewalls, wireless access points.

Hands‑on experience configuring, upgrading, managing, and troubleshooting routers/switches and wireless APs.

Demonstrated ability to design, install, and troubleshoot LAN/WAN enterprise networks.

Minimum 8 years of direct hands‑on experience in the networking industry.

Industry‑standard networking certification (e.g., Cisco CCNA, Juniper JNCIA) required.

In‑depth experience designing, installing, and troubleshooting LAN/WAN networks.

Experience monitoring IT environments for compliance with security policies and standards.

Experience creating repeatable, reliable, scalable network architectures with fault tolerance.

Experience in performance tuning, monitoring, metrics collection, and disaster recovery.

Experience creating network diagrams using Visio or similar tools.

Knowledge of network protocols: ARP, CDP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VTP, EtherChannel, HSRP, QoS, multicast, IPsec, etc.

Experience with SDWAN (desired 3 years).

Experience with cloud networking topology (desired 3 years).
