Marketing Statement Does servicing and troubleshooting state‑of‑the‑art equipment on our bus fleet motivate you? The Maintenance Trainee participates in the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP) for a two‑year, developmental training in Bus Fleet Maintenance (BMNT). The trainee must progress through four training levels, including classroom and on‑the‑job training, as outlined in the TSP. Upon graduation the trainee is assigned as a Mechanic, grade C, working under close supervision of management and TSP mentor mechanics. Job Description The opening is available for current and future vacancies in the BMNT classification, covering various shifts, locations, and days off. Selection is based on fitness and ability, with preference given to candidates from the Maintenance and Construction District, System‑wide (L689), and Authority‑wide.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma with two (2) years of vocational training in Electrical, Mechanical, or Electronics.

In lieu of vocational training, one (1) year of related work experience may be considered.

Upon the achievement of 1,000 hours at a particular grade level, advancement to the next level is possible provided written or practical tests are passed and fitness standards met.

Experience

Level C – No prior experience required.

Level B – Minimum 6 months as a Level C trainee and 1,000 hours of work at that level.

Level A – Minimum 6 months as a Level B trainee and 1,000 hours of work at that level.

Level AA – Minimum 6 months as a Level A trainee and 1,000 hours of work at that level.

Certification/Licensure

Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger bus and air‑brake endorsements. In lieu of an interstate CDL, an intrastate CDL valid until age 21, or a CDL learner’s permit with successful completion of WMATA CDL training within 90 days, is acceptable.

Proof of a safe driving record: no more than four (4) points and one (1) moving violation accumulated over 24 months.

Mission Essential Designation This role is identified as critical to mission essential functions under WMATA’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP). Incumbents may be required to work during authorized office closings or service suspensions resulting from severe weather, natural disasters, fire, operational emergencies, or related events.

Summary The Maintenance Trainee, Bus Maintenance is an apprentice role leading to graduation from the WMATA TSP and assignment to a General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic C. The incumbent must complete all formal classroom and on‑the‑job training during the two‑year TSP and acquire at least one Automotive Service Excellence Certification (ASE) in Transit Bus before program completion.

Essential Functions

Attend formal training classes and pass all written and practical examinations with a score of 75% or higher.

Develop skills in maintenance, inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing, and calibration of WMATA buses and equipment.

Under direct oversight, use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment to inspect, diagnose, and repair bus malfunctions per safety and maintenance procedures.

Work with OJT mentors to perform repairs and service of WMATA vehicles and equipment.

Complete all documentation and reports related to bus maintenance and required training.

Assist supervisors and mechanical staff in emergencies, ensuring safe handling of equipment during fires, life‑safety incidents, snow emergencies, etc.

Other Functions

Maintain and promote safety policies and procedures, foster a positive safety culture, and encourage reporting of safety concerns in accordance with the Agency Safety Plan, Safety Management System, and just‑culture principles.

Evaluation Criteria

Skills and/or behavioral assessment.

Personal interview.

Verification of education, experience, certifications, and licenses.

Criminal background check.

Medical examination including a drug and alcohol screening.

Review of a current motor vehicle report.
