Job Summary The HVAC Take-Off Technician is responsible for generating accurate and competitive cost estimates for mechanical systems across a variety of construction projects. This role is essential to the bidding and planning process, ensuring both profitability and adherence to technical specifications. This position offers a clear path to advancement: candidates who consistently exceed expectations in their Take-Off Technician duties will have the opportunity to transition into an Estimator role.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Review and analyze project drawings, specifications, and scope documents to develop detailed cost estimates.
Perform on screening take-off duties as the primary job responsibility.
Quantify materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to ensure alignment on scope and pricing.
Solicit and evaluate bids from suppliers and subcontractors.
Assist in preparing and submitting bid proposals, budgets, and cost breakdowns.
Assist in preparation for pre-bid meetings and site visits to assess project conditions.
Maintain and update cost databases, historical pricing records, and estimating tools.
Support value engineering efforts and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Assist in post-award cost tracking and budget management.
Qualifications To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Attention to detail and excellent communication skills are a must-have for this position.
Preferred Education And/or Experience
High School diploma or equivalent required.
Minimum 3 years’ experience with on-screen take-off within the HVAC industry.
Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Excel, Trimble, AutoBid, or similar).
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Excellent analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
Strong communication and negotiation abilities.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with local building codes and industry standards.
Experience with BIM and digital takeoff tools.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple estimates simultaneously.
Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
