Unit Supervisor/Investigator Supervisor
Requirements High School diploma or GED supplemented with vocational coursework or technical training in law enforcement, criminology, or a related field and at least 2 years of law‑enforcement experience performing investigations. A thorough background check will be conducted prior to offering the position.
Function The purpose of this classification is to investigate criminal cases related to the Cuyahoga County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force and/or cold‑case sexual assaults and homicides; to facilitate adjudication of cases by assisting prosecutors with case information, locating victims, witnesses, and suspects, and providing other functions related to investigations.
Responsibilities
Manage a personal docket of unsolved sexual assault and/or homicide investigations following new leads provided by DNA testing.
Conduct investigations; locate case files; coordinate and execute search warrants; collect, document, and log evidence during searches.
Review forensic lab reports; locate, gather, and preserve physical evidence; communicate with forensic lab regarding analysis.
Locate and interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.
Conduct surveillance.
Provide investigative and technical assistance to law‑enforcement agencies.
Serve subpoenas.
Testify in court regarding investigations.
Prepare investigative reports.
Assist prosecutors in completing case files.
Communicate with a variety of members of the public, family members, outside and county agencies, witnesses, suspects, law‑enforcement agencies, attorneys, advocate groups, and other investigators.
Attend and participate in group meetings and training sessions.
Perform all other duties assigned, delegated, or required of the Investigator as well as those prescribed by law.
Experience and Skills
Ability to perform basic data analysis, including reviewing, classifying, categorizing, prioritizing, and referencing data, statutes, guidelines, and investigative information.
Proficiency in comprehending diverse informational documents such as police case files, forensic lab reports, medical records, subpoenas, financial records, investigative reports, vehicle titles, handwriting exemplars, and written statements and interviews.
Competence in preparing emails, investigative reports, expense reports, subpoenas, search warrants, diagrams, vehicle mileage reports, and other job‑related documents using prescribed formats and adhering to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
Knowledge of basic medical, legal, forensic, counseling, and financial terminology.
Strong communication skills and ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with victims, witnesses, suspects, attorneys, law‑enforcement personnel, co‑workers, staff, the general public, and supervisors.
Exhibit fairness, strong work ethic, and highest integrity.
Maintain confidentiality of law‑enforcement and investigative records, files, criminal records, and other confidential information.
Conduct business in accordance with federal statutes and guidelines, the Ohio Revised Code, and the Ohio Administrative Code.
