$1,703.92 – $2,205.07 bi‑weekly ($44,301.81 – $57,331.75 annual)

The Work You Will Do Senior Equipment Operator / District 6 / North Dade Maintenance

Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment including road graders, sewer cleaners, and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work on equipment, such as checking and adding fluids, adjusting brakes, maintaining proper air pressure in tires, and cleaning and washing equipment. Assists in the repair of operating equipment.

Your Specific Responsibilities

Operate vehicles and a variety of large equipment, including road graders, sewer cleaners, and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.

Perform minor maintenance and servicing on equipment, such as checking and adding fluids, checking/adjusting brakes, maintaining proper air pressure in tires, and washing equipment.

Assist in repair of operating equipment and supervise Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities (optional duty).

Coordinate, participate, and direct maintenance activity of the assigned crew; assist in selecting materials, supplies, and equipment; inspect, plan workloads, workflows, deadlines, and objectives; maintain records of operation.

Prepare and maintain daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.

Perform independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.

Perform Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).

Perform rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assist in assembly and erection of highway signs.

Train crew members in operation of heavy equipment and basic Temporary Traffic Control; assist with crew activity reports as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:

Mathematical calculations.

Standard safety rules and procedures.

Procedures, techniques, and use of equipment in maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, and other highway structures.

Skills in:

Operating a variety of hand and power tools.

Operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles.

Completing job‑related reports and forms.

Communicating verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.

Abilities to:

Operate a variety of heavy equipment.

Train others.

Read and understand job‑related materials.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.

Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend frequently.

Work outdoors in various weather conditions, terrains, and heights or in high‑volume traffic.

Stand for an extended period of time.

Other Job‑Related Requirements

Must respond to emergencies and be on‑call (24‑hour duty) when necessary.

Must be able to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) consistent with the required CDLs.

A valid Class A CDL is required.

Must obtain and maintain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year.

Must work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and four years of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience. An additional year of experience (five years total) can substitute for a diploma.

Valid Class A CDL at the time of hire.

Driving Record Requirements The position requires a valid Class A driver license with an acceptable driving record. Unacceptable records include:

Three or more moving violations in the past three years that accumulate three or more points per violation.

Any two convictions of reckless driving in the past three years.

A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three years.

A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past four years.

Screening and Benefits A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. The State’s total compensation package includes health insurance (over 90% employer paid), $25,000 life insurance policy (100% employer paid), dental, vision and supplemental insurances, State of Florida retirement package, 10 paid holidays a year, generous vacation and sick leave, and tuition waiver for public college courses.

Special Requirements Social Security Number must be provided for verification purposes. Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, are not eligible for hire unless registered with the Selective Service System before their 26th birthday or have a Letter of Registration Exemption.
