Job Summary The Architectural Designer/Drafter assists the District Architect in meeting the needs of the district in relation to construction and improvement projects. The position provides design and drafting services that may include programming, design, drafting, construction documents, and other related work, as assigned, for selected district facilities, maintenance repair, and improvement projects. The position is responsible for maintaining and further developing the CAD libraries and standards for drafting on all construction documents needed for the district.

Essential Functions

Create design drawings with computer-aided design (CAD) software both in 2D and 3D formats, at the direction of the District Architect.

Produce design drawings per project specifications.

Analyze available information to determine and plan the best approach to develop and complete design drawings.

Ensure drawings comply with building regulations and district architectural standards.

Prepare documents to a level consistent with set quality standards while maintaining project schedules.

Help in the planning efforts for district facilities and related functional needs, both current and long-range.

Work with principals, teachers, and other district personnel in the design of capital improvement projects at the schools and other facilities.

Perform a variety of complex professional architectural duties involved in the design, drafting, construction, and maintenance of district facilities.

Maintain key information for all building plans, i.e. square footage, site acreage, etc.

Update and maintain the library of building drawings and related records kept by the district.

Help to maintain and update district design guidelines for education specifications and architectural programs for new facilities and capital improvement projects through coordination with AE&C staff, other district personnel, and design consultants.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of the principles of drafting, design, and planning.

Knowledge of BIM tools and CAD systems, primarily AutoCAD and basic Revit.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of people at various levels in multiple situations, including district staff as well as other state and local government agencies.

Ability to organize and balance multiple projects and issues simultaneously with little supervision and minimal direction.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, staff, contractors, consultants, other public agencies, and the general public.

Ability to analyze, interpret, and report research findings.

Ability to understand complex technical issues and apply technical knowledge in the development of solutions for projects within agreed upon time frames.

Ability to make independent project decisions and to communicate the reasoning and factors leading to these decisions.

Ability to develop or assist in the development of master planning.

Skilled in the design and planning of buildings, interiors, and sites.

Skilled in the use of computer for email communication, word processing, spreadsheets, Bluebeam, and graphics. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel).

Ability to read architectural drawings, structural drawings, and mechanical/electrical/plumbing drawings.

Ability to open and operate the latest Autodesk AutoCAD version, create and edit documents and manage a design process using the AutoCAD platform. Should have basic knowledge of a BIM model in Revit.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Required Education, Experience, Training, and Qualifications

Valid driver’s license.

Minimum of five (5) years of combined educational and/or occupational experience in drafting or design.

Preferred: a total of seven (7) years of combined educational and/or occupational experience in drafting or design.

Other Job Details Salary: Middle Manager. Placement: Lane. Length: 12 months (243 days). Full-Time Equivalent: 1.0. Classification: Exempt. Special Designations: None.

Work Environment

Work takes place in a typical office environment.

Site evaluations and facility assessments may be done indoors but some will be done outdoors in all seasons of the year.

Construction in progress may expose the architectural designer/draftsperson to potential physical hazards.

Must travel to sites in a Granite School District car in all types of seasonal weather.

Position occasionally requires work beyond 40 hours per week.

Physical Demands

Speak and/or hear regularly.

Stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch frequently.

Use hands to handle or feel objects occasionally; occasionally climb or balance.

Require close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 20 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds.
