Job Description Purpose and Scope The Specialist III, AEL Support (Grant) provides assistance to program staff across several grant processes to include test proctoring, initial advising for students on Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) grant‑funded programs or certificates, and assistance in organizing and correcting grant files. Assists as needed to register students in all grant‑funded Adult Education classes. Supports other staff by performing task‑oriented duties while providing clerical, analytical, administrative, and operational support under general supervision. Work is primarily at the assigned location, but hours could split due to the needs of the grant between LSC-Houston North Greenspoint, LSC-University Center Montgomery and other LSC campuses and off‑site community partner locations where AEL classes are offered.
This is a temporary, grant‑funded position. Continuation of the position from one academic year to the next is dependent upon continued grant funding. Professional Development for TWC, HGAC and LSCS is required by the deadline.
Essential Job Functions
Proctors student pre‑program and post‑course placement testing
Welcomes, greets and provides general support to all AEL prospective students and visitors in a polite and professional manner
Advises visitors on available and upcoming orientation and testing session dates and provides detail on eligibility requirements per AEL program
Answers multiple phone lines, takes messages, and/or transfers callers; records messages from voicemail and returns phone calls in a timely manner
Registers and drops students for AEL classes including High School Equivalency or GED, English as a Second Language, Workforce Education and Training Certificates and Developmental Education
Provides students with information and proper referrals to available resources and services on campus
Manages and replies to departmental communications in a timely manner
Collects and processes necessary documents required to enroll students in AEL High School Equivalency or GED preparation classes; provides students with oral and written instructions to take the TABE or tests of Adult Basic Education exam
Provides support to managers and all other AEL staff to ensure efficient operations
Contacts students, instructors and staff regarding class cancellations or postponement
Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to work on multiple projects
Ability to document expenses
Physical Abilities The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
Work Schedule and Conditions
Equipment used includes PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment
Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
Work is performed in a climate‑controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
Some evenings and weekends may be required
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree or higher
Salary Hourly Pay Rate is $15.60
