Under general supervision, the Nurse assumes 24‑hour accountability to plan and provide direct professional nursing care for specified patients throughout the entire episode of service delivery as defined by population and unit. The Nurse provides nursing services in accordance with the standards of practice of a professional nurse, CCMC policies & procedures, Joint Commission, and State & federal regulations, and reports to the Nurse Manager.
Responsibilities
CLINICAL PRACTICE
– On a daily basis, demonstrates clinical expertise and uses the nursing process to provide safe, appropriate patient care.
POPULATION SPECIFIC
– Demonstrates knowledge of the differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice; demonstrates cultural sensitivity.
UNIT LEADERSHIP
– Delegates duties and tasks to clinical staff, contributes to unit leadership as Resource Nurse or through preceptor/mentor activities, and supports productivity and resource management.
DOCUMENTATION/COMMUNICATION
– Completes all required documentation timely and effectively communicates information to the health‑care team.
PATIENT/FAMILY PARTNERSHIP & EDUCATION
– Partners with child and family in evaluating outcomes, monitors and evaluates patient/family responses to treatment, provides education, and supports the organization’s patient/family education efforts.
CCMC STANDARDS
– Demonstrates support for the mission, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors consistent with CCMC Standards.
Education and Experience
ASN required upon hire. BSN preferred upon hire and required within 3 years of hire.
2–5 years PICU and/or adult critical care experience preferred; minimum 2 years of pediatric experience considered on an individual basis; may consider non‑critical pediatric experience when appropriate.
New graduates considered on an individual basis.
License and Certifications
Current State of Connecticut Registered Nurse licensure required.
Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR in adult, child & infant required upon hire.
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training certification required within 3 months of hire.
PALS preferred upon hire and required within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of nursing theory, state regulations, clinical standards, documentation policies, teaching techniques, developmental and population‑specific assessment techniques.
Skill in interpersonal and communication, independent and team work, clinical and procedural decision‑making, confidentiality, delegation, and written and oral communication.
Adequate computer proficiency and Internet research skills.
