Job Summary The Nurse Educator assists Patient Care Managers in delivering quality patient care by ensuring the clinical competence of nursing staff.
Collaborating with the Nursing Professional Development Specialist and Clinical Nurse Specialist, the educator develops, delivers, and evaluates education and training for staff on the unit, including orientation, in‑services, and continuing education programs.
Responsibilities include creating and teaching programs that incorporate current nursing research, focus on patient‑care skills for the assigned area, address quality improvement and accreditation/licensing requirements, and consult with managers and staff regarding patient care and performance issues.
Essential Functions Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements, including sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient rights, safety, emergency management, teamwork, ongoing education, and adherence to national patient safety goals.
They must also perform all duties in accordance with hospital policies, Service Standards, and the Code of Conduct.
Gather data from needs assessments, quality reports, and other sources to determine the learning needs of staff and desired outcomes.
Promote quality patient care by serving as a resource to nurse managers for bedside staff education and training needs.
Plan, prepare, and maintain educational materials that are accurate and relevant to the target audience.
Develop, implement, and evaluate cost‑effective educational programs for staff, patients, and families in the assigned area or population.
Teach in formal and informal settings using appropriate adult‑learning methodologies and strategies.
Develop and coordinate core education addressing patient‑population–specific nursing care.
Deliver competency‑based programs that focus on skill improvement and knowledge retention.
Incorporate clinical research into education and training programs to provide a scientific foundation for professional nursing practice.
Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programming.
Ensure educational programs align with the organization’s mission, values, and goals.
Identify specific needs for enhancing nurse professional development.
Maintain clinical competency in the approved specialty.
Promote a safe and healthy work environment.
Serve as a role model for excellence and safety, encouraging lifelong learning.
Integrate ethical principles into all aspects of practice.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, and possession of any required licenses or certifications.
Education Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a work‑related discipline from an accredited college or university is required.
Employees hired before January 15, 2017 are not required to obtain an MSN.
Those hired after that date must enroll in an accredited MSN in Nursing Education or a Master in Education program and receive the degree within five years of job acceptance, or hold a Master’s in Nursing with a graduate nursing education certificate within three years.
Experience Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in a clinical setting.
License / Certification
Registered Nurse by the California Board of Registered Nursing
Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association (AHA) or RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support
Knowledge
American Nurses Association Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development in teaching/learning activities.
Computer skills: MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Effective oral and written communication, adaptable to the receiver’s understanding.
Team‑player skills and time‑management ability.
Professional writing, reading, and comprehension at a level appropriate for the occupation.

Salary ranges may be determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and internal equity.
Typical new hires join at the minimum to mid salary range.
