Position Overview The Associate Director of Social Media at Rowan University holds a pivotal role in supporting the institution’s online presence and reputation. This individual is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive social media strategies that enhance the university’s brand recognition, engage diverse audiences, and drive student recruitment, engagement, and retention efforts. This position requires overseeing a team of dedicated professionals and coordinating all aspects of social media management, content creation, community building, and analytics.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement a holistic social media strategy across all relevant platforms, with a primary focus on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube and additional channels of interest including Spotify, Pinterest, Snapchat, GIPHY, Threads, and ZeeMee, among others.

Lead and manage a team of social media professionals, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Encourage creativity, growth, and continuous improvement among team members.

Oversee student and content creator programs as needed to amplify the University’s social media reach and engagement.

Coordinate and advise on best practices with the distributed social media professionals throughout the University, including but not limited to all colleges and high‑reaching departments.

Lead the creation of engaging and culturally relevant content to strengthen the University’s brand equity.

Supervise the social media editorial calendar, ensuring a balanced mix of proactive and real‑time content.

Develop and oversee University‑wide organic social media campaigns.

Work closely with the market research team to ensure ongoing social listening to monitor brand sentiment and identify conversation trends. Utilize insights to inform content creation, tone, and overall social strategy.

Work collaboratively and creatively across teams within the Division of Marketing and Communication to optimize creativity and resources to develop the most engaging brand story possible across all social channels.

Reinforce social media strategy, policies, and graphic standards to expand and strengthen the university’s online presence.

Develop workshops and share social media best practices with university communicators.

Audit University‑branded social media accounts.

Utilize social media analytics and reporting across all platforms to analyze social campaign and account results, assess and optimize performance, identify trends, and provide key insights and recommendations.

Work closely with University leadership to handle crisis communications and public relations efforts in real‑time and assist in strategic planning for crisis situations.

Ensure the team utilizes the latest tools and technology to support social media strategy, analytics, community management, listening, and optimization.

Serve as a social ambassador within the University, advocating for adoption and enthusiasm for social media across all university departments.

Provide training and guidance to all communicators with Rowan‑branded social media accounts.

Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in the social media industry and implement best practices creatively.

Align content with overarching social strategy and brand/campaign voice.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field (Master’s a plus).

At least 5 years of experience in social media management, customer engagement roles, and/or communications roles.

3 or more years of experience managing a team.

Experience in 16‑24 year‑old consumer‑facing brands.

Strong understanding of all social media platforms, listening tools (e.g., Sprout Social) and CRM systems.

Expertise in content development, storytelling, online community building, community management, analytics, and social listening.

Proven ability to analyze data and translate insights into strategies and goal setting.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills; problem‑solving and relationship‑building skills.

Experience managing cross‑functional projects and customer‑focused initiatives.

Action‑oriented, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement.

Experience managing internal and external cross‑functional partnerships.

Salary & Benefits

In compliance with The State of New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000. When extending any salary offer, Rowan University considers many factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, work experience, education, training, key skills, internal equity, as well as market and other organizational considerations. For eligible employees, benefits include comprehensive NJ State health, dental and retirement benefits, extensive accrued time off/paid holidays, and tuition reimbursement for employee, spouse, and dependents to attend Rowan University, Glassboro. Tuition reimbursement will apply to undergraduate degrees only for spouse and dependents.
