Description/Notes:
Primary Purpose: Provide leadership and administrative oversight of the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP) in accordance with Texas Education Code Chapter 37, district policies, and local procedures. Ensure the DAEP provides a safe, structured, and supportive environment focused on academic progress, behavior modification, and successful student transition back to the home campus.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master’s degree in educational administration or related field from an accredited institution
Valid Texas Principal or Mid-Management Administrator Certification
Certified Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) appraiser
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of alternative education law, policy, and best practices
Strong instructional leadership and knowledge of curriculum and assessment
Expertise in behavior management, conflict resolution, and restorative practices
Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to analyze data to guide instruction and monitor student progress
Excellent interpersonal skills including de-escalation techniques and complex problem solving
Experience:
Three years experience as a classroom teacher
Three years experience in campus or district level leadership roles
Experience working with challenging student discipline issues
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Leadership
Ensure instructional delivery aligns with TEKS and district curriculum standards.
Monitor teaching and learning to ensure continuity of instruction between DAEP and home campuses.
Provide instructional coaching and professional development for DAEP teachers.
Oversee individualized learning plans and progress monitoring for assigned students.
School Climate & Student Support
Ensure compliance with TEC Chapter 37, TEA requirements, and district policies.
Supervise all DAEP staff and conduct evaluations per district guidelines.
Maintain accurate records of student assignments, attendance, discipline, and instructional progress.
Develop and manage the DAEP campus budget.
Oversee facility operations, safety procedures, and emergency response plans.
Administration & Compliance
Ensure compliance with TEC Chapter 37, TEA requirements, and district policies.
Supervise all DAEP staff and conduct evaluations per district guidelines.
Maintain accurate records of student assignments, attendance, discipline, and instructional progress.
Develop and manage the DAEP campus budget.
Oversee facility operations, safety procedures, and emergency response plans.
Collaboration & Communication
Serve as liaison between DAEP, home campuses, parents, and district leadership.
Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
Collaborate with law enforcement, juvenile justice, and community agencies as needed.
Provide reports and data analysis to district leadership regarding DAEP operations and student outcomes.
Professional Growth & Ethics
Model professional behavior and ethical practices.
Engage in ongoing professional development to strengthen leadership and instructional skills.
School or Community Relations
Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
Demonstrate awareness of school and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs using appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing of staff assigned to campus including assistant principal(s), teachers, counselor(s), librarian(s), instructional aides, clerical support staff, and custodians.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture: Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional physical restraint of students to control behavior
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise; occasional districtwide and statewide travel
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
