Position Overview The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the Assistant Corporation Counsel I (ACC I) role in the Legal Information and Prosecutions (LIP) Division. The ACC I will prosecute and defend Chicago Municipal Code violations, manage administrative appeals, and represent the City in FOIA, electronic discovery, and Local Records Act matters.
Responsibilities
Prosecute Chicago Municipal Code violations in Cook County Circuit Court, including Traffic Court, Branch Courts, and the City’s Department of Administrative Hearings.
Defend administrative decisions from the Department of Administrative Hearings in Circuit Court administrative appeals.
Represent the City in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) matters, document production, electronic discovery, and Local Records Act (LRA) proceedings.
Try cases, conduct hearings, research and write motions, memoranda, and briefs, litigate administrative appeals, argue motions, and engage in settlement negotiations.
Work closely with client departments, review and analyze files, and recommend appropriate courses of action.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Superior writing, research, and editing skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience counseling and advising clients.
Some administrative proceeding or Circuit Court courtroom experience.
Demonstrated ability to work well with others and exhibit sound judgment.
Ability to exhibit initiative on assigned tasks.
Strong organizational, prioritization, and deadline‑management skills.
Qualifications
Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree.
Admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligibility for admission on motion pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705).
Good standing with the Illinois Board of Professional Responsibility and the Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission.
