General Definition of Work The elementary school teacher, under moderate supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision‑making discretion, providing leadership in the educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met. Employee performs school‑based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.

Salary/Status Certified Schedule/Full‑time, 10 months
Reports To Principal
Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools. The district reserves the right to require working at other locations as reasonably required.
Essential Functions
Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards
Assist school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure; maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students
Plan and implement a program of study in the assigned content area that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students
Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods
Create a classroom environment that encourages engagement and achievement of learning objectives
Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals; establish clear objectives for lessons, units, projects; communicate objectives to students
Establish learning objectives based on student needs and district curriculum framework
Prepare for classes assigned and provide written evidence of preparation when requested
Diagnose learning challenges of students regularly; maintain accurate records for IEPs and 504 Plans
Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency
Prepare and provide materials and classroom activities; offer a variety of materials for exploration and imaginative play
Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere through challenges
Use techniques that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking
Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress
Assign and grade classwork and homework
Act as test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program; fulfill requirements per the North Carolina School Test Coordinator's Handbook and policy GCS‑A‑010
Observe and assess students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical needs regularly
Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, determine priorities and resources, and encourage parental involvement; collaborate with parents, counselors, and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic challenges
Prepare and implement enrichment and remediation programs
Attend Professional Learning Community (PLC) and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning
Participate in professional development focused on acquiring and improving teaching skills and knowledge
Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment
Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles and expectations in the assigned area
Knowledge of how to use data and information to make instructional decisions
Understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, assessment, and research related to learning
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency with computers and software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
Ability to learn and use specialized instructional tools and software
Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures in daily operations
Strong judgment and collaborative relationships
Problem‑solving skills using sound judgment
Confidentiality of school system business
Initiative, independent work, sound judgment
Effective teamwork in a deadline‑driven, rapidly changing environment
Education And Experience
Bachelor’s degree required
Valid NC Teaching certification or eligibility for NC Teaching certification in the assigned area
Equivalent combination of education and experience
