Job Description We are seeking a Junior Outside Machinist to provide support at the Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Product Family located in San Diego, CA. This Junior Outside Machinist will be responsible for accomplishing mechanical repairs and testing onboard ships and in the shop, including removal, repair, overhaul, installation, alignment, troubleshooting, modification, and testing of ship’s mechanical systems and equipment.

Responsibilities

Accomplish mechanical repairs and testing onboard ships and in the shop.

Work includes removal, repair, overhaul, installation, alignment, troubleshooting, modifying, and testing on ship’s mechanical systems, equipment, and components—including:

Antenna tilting groups (ATGs), twin and single boom.

Boat davit equipment, including nitrogen accumulators; system nitrogen charging, hydro testing, and functional/operational testing of related systems.

Torpedo strike down equipment, including lift and dogging hatch actuator cylinders.

Various types and sizes of hydraulic and pneumatic pumps and related components.

Capstans, winches, anchor windlasses, steering pumps, sliding pad eyes, and towing array mechanical equipment.

Mag cable reel brake systems.

Slew motors, luff cylinders, and hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.

Retractable bitts, roller chocks, Baxter bolts, and deck drains.

Mass or limit torque motor‑operated valve (MOV) mechanical gear assemblies and hydraulic control motors.

Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) and JP‑5 hose reels.

Utilize standard mechanic’s tools, torque wrenches, micrometers, dial indicators, and other precision measuring instruments, fixtures, portable machine tools, and various gauges for removal, repair, overhaul, assembly, installation, and testing.

Disassemble, clean, inspect, and assess equipment parts and components to determine wear and damage, recommending reuse or disposal.

Identify materials and parts requiring replacement and provide replacement recommendations to the Government.

Protect machined and critical surfaces during removal; install foreign material exclusion (FME) coverings on all openings.

Identify, tag, and inspect system, equipment, and piping components, connections, fasteners, and parts for reinstallation or replacement.

Perform pump and motor alignments using Rotoalign laser alignment optics and reverse indicator methods.

Ensure all removed interferences are correctly reinstalled.

Drill, tap, thread, and clean various deck and equipment fastener/fastener hole threads.

Qualifications

High School education, trade school, or equivalent and 4 years of related experience; technical/professional certifications preferred.

Must provide own hand tools per trades specialty.

Must be able to complete OSHA 10, CPR, low‑speed vehicle training, and PQS 301 Craftsman qualification within 90 days of direct support.

Must be able to obtain and maintain CAC ID Base access and DoD Security Clearance.

Start date contingent upon approval of base access.

May require forklift license; forklift physical training may be required.

Bonus Points

Current valid DoD confidential security clearance or higher.

Recent outside machinist experience on USN ships.

Prefer technical/professional certifications.

Physical Requirements

Work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms; stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in uncomfortable positions; work in inclement weather and high noise levels.

Frequently lift, carry, and help set up tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 50 pounds; occasional assistance with items over 50 pounds (two persons).

Work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, industrial conditions, and confined spaces.

Perform duties that may involve high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over vessel sides.

May require wearing a respirator; travel may be required within and outside the continental United States.
