Description Department : Youth & Community Wellness Program : School Programs Attendance Intervention Status : Temporary, part-time, non-exempt (Up to 25 hours weekly) Pay : $21.87 per hour Based at : Castle Park High Schedule : Work schedule is based on the general operating hours of the schools served. Candidate must be available to work between 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., to meet the various needs of the program.

Program School Programs Attendance Intervention provides staffing resources to specific school sites to help support the school’s overall attendance objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the School Programs Attendance Intervention Coordinator, the Attendance Intervention Specialist is responsible for maintaining up-to-the minute information on the attendance of students from the start of the school day, throughout the school day and during after school programs. Attendance Intervention Specialist provides immediate information on any absent students, at all times, to outreach staff who will go to the homes of absent youth to inquire about their whereabouts and bring them back to school, if possible. Additionally, the Attendance Intervention Specialist understands the school population and the inherent nature of a culture that is shifting its values and therefore also creates reward systems for regular and improved attendance.

Conducts home visits to meet with parents regarding attendance and how he/she can assist parents to better face obstacles that make it difficult for students to attend school regularly.

Conducts a Family Well-Being Assessment to determine the root causes of school attendance and chronic absenteeism and provides resources, referrals, and support.

Identifies challenges that students are facing which impede their regular attendance and connects students and their families to programs and resources to address the barriers towards attendance.

Runs weekly attendance reports to track student progress and identify students who may need additional support.

Provides immediate information on students who are not at school at the beginning of the school day, students who ‘ditch’ and students who were in attendance, at the beginning of the school day who failed to attend their respective after school programs

Understands and follows appropriate procedures in accordance with the attendance contracts.

Provides administrative support including but not limited to answering phones, typing reports (Excel, Word, etc.) creating and disseminating call slips, calling parents and any other indicated or required duties.

Maintains documentation, data collection and contract compliance of client records in the Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) database as required by SBCS and its funding sources.

Maintains confidentiality and privacy standards in accordance with agency and center policies, and applicable regulations and laws including HIPAA.

Schedules Pre-SARB meetings with Assistant Principal, student, and parents.

Attends monthly SARB hearings at the school district.

Intervenes in all cases of absence, truancy, and tardiness.

Maintains regular communication with the Attendance Clerk.

Infuses the collegebound SDPN culture into all interactions with students when discussing their lack of motivation to attend school regularly.

Attend all agency required meetings and training.

As other duties assigned.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Must have successfully passed district school Instructional Aid Exam or have an AA/BS degree from an accredited university.

Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth in an after-school environment or educational setting is highly desirable.

Possesses knowledge of attendance policies and guidelines.

Must have a warm and friendly personality, while also being sensitive to the needs of a diverse population.

Must be dependable and willing to fulfill the job responsibilities in accordance with the program and agency goals.

Must have initiative, organizational, clerical, interpersonal and leadership skills.

Must have basic computer skills, record keeping, email, and able to update and maintain spreadsheets.

Must possess good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, including Outlook, Word, and Excel to develop, update, maintain and manage spreadsheets and data reports.

Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural sensitivity, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients

Must be able to relate to youth and adults in a professional manner.

Conditions of Employment

Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, drug test, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program.

Candidate is required to have reliable transportation; therefore, the candidate must successfully complete a motor history check. Candidate must also possess and maintain a current valid California driver’s license and valid auto insurance policy. (Approximately 10 – 15% of the time)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift.

Must be able to observe critical incidents and act swiftly in an emergency situation.

Moves throughout the building.

Moves, raises, or lowers (includes upward pulling) an object or equipment up to 50 lbs.

Transports an object, from 20 to 50 lbs. across the facility, for various needs.

Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force.

Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking)

Ascending or descending stairs and ladders when applicable. Body agility is emphasized.

Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when ascending, descending, traversing.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with objects or office machinery.

Communicating: Expressing or exchanging ideas. Communicating is important for those activities in which workers must impart information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important instructions to other workers accurately, or quickly.
