Position Summary
Position: OPS Research Associate – 77901693.
Agency: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
Location: 100 8th Ave S, Saint Petersburg, FL.
Salary: $26 per hour.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) in St. Petersburg supports this mission through research and monitoring.
Minimum Qualifications
Six years of professional experience in a closely related biological field or laboratory program, or
A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in a physical or natural science or mathematics plus two years of related experience, or
Two years of experience as a Research Assistant – FWC, or
A master’s degree with major coursework in one of the listed disciplines, or
A doctorate with major coursework in one of the listed disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in microalgae identification by light, fluorescence, and/or electron microscopy.
Experience culturing microalgae.
Experience with molecular or imaging techniques applied to microorganism taxonomy and physiology.
Expertise with phytoplankton and harmful algae, especially cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, and other flagellate taxa.
Requirements
Employment contingent upon a satisfactory Level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate.

Position Overview and Responsibilities
Conduct phytoplankton identification, microscopy, laboratory support, and data management.
Support HAB monitoring by identifying and enumerating marine and estuarine phytoplankton in live and preserved samples.
Prepare data for databases, learn new taxa, and communicate results internally and externally.
Assist with sample preparation and analysis for light and electron microscopy studies.
Prepare technical reports, proof documents, and share findings with target audiences.
Maintain accurate laboratory records and coordinate with volunteer programs and outreach activities.
Provide supervisory support to assigned staff within the microscopy program when required.
Collaborate with other researchers and participate in field work, outreach, and program activities as requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of phytoplankton morphology and taxonomy, including species that form harmful algal blooms.
Proficiency in identifying phytoplankton to genus and species level, especially Florida HAB species.
Ability to plan and coordinate work assignments, manage records, and analyze data.
Experience in preparing reagents and following established protocols.
Effective communication with staff and partners.
Supervision and mentoring of junior staff.
Teamwork, problem‑solving, and learning new taxonomic methods.
Knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
