Job Summary Collects blood specimens for the clinical laboratories. Functions as an intermediary between the patient, patient caregivers, and the laboratories. Assures proper specimen collection and identification in compliance with section policies and procedures. Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served.

How You'll Impact Patient Care
Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Adheres to the general Medical Center standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
- Assures accurate and timely collection of blood specimens, according to departmental practices.
- Assures accurate identification and delivery of patient samples to appropriate lab sections.
- Follows proper safety and identification procedures when dealing with patients and/or specimens under any circumstance or environment.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge of phlebotomy by serving as a willing resource to staff and applying knowledge in daily routines.
- Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education.
- Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department.
- Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases.
- Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.
- Provides age-appropriate specimen collection in accordance with age specific guidelines for school age, adolescents, early adults, middle adults and/or late adults.
- Maintains inventory and supplies related to job activities and monitors expiration dates.
- Performs clerical functions including entry of lab orders into the LIS, printing and delivery of reports, filing reports, preparing requisitions, and obtaining information or entering information into the laboratory or hospital computer system.
- Performs specimen processing in accordance with laboratory policies.
- May perform waived testing.
- May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Certifications To Qualify
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Two‑year age‑appropriate phlebotomy experience preferred.
- ASCP, AMT, ASPT or equivalent certification from an accredited Phlebotomy training program that includes successful completion of a certification exam with passing scores.
- CPR certification required.
