Skilled work in the operation of heavy automotive and related equipment, including automated side loader garbage trucks, rear end loader garbage trucks with packer and dumping controls, street sweeping machinery and roll off trucks, while coordinating duties of assigned vehicle crew members (Waste Collectors) in the Department of Solid Waste. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the referenced heavy equipment, as well as the coordination of duties of a crew of Waste Collectors when applicable. An employee in this class regularly performs related loading and unloading duties when required. The operation of this equipment entails considerable manipulative skill. Employees in this class are responsible for the safety of other workers who assist with work performed by use of the equipment. Supervision is received from a Sanitation Supervisor or other higher‑level administrative official who gives oral and written work assignments and inspects work in progress and upon completion. Positions in this class differ from those in the class of Waste Collector Operator I due to the fact that the equipment operated is heavier and/or more complex.

Drives an automated side loader garbage truck or rear loader garbage truck with packer and dumping controls on assigned routes. If applicable, checks assigned crewmembers (Waste Collectors) to assure that they properly empty garbage containers and replace them.

  • Performs loading and unloading duties.
  • Operates an automated side loader garbage truck, rear end loader garbage truck with packer and dumping controls, street sweeping machinery and roll off truck and other Solid Waste vehicles.
  • Operates garbage trucks hauling garbage/rubbish from various points in the City to the disposal pit or the transfer station.
  • Performs daily vehicle and equipment pre/post inspections. Reports any damages and malfunctions to supervisors and mechanical shop to ensure equipment is operable in an efficient time.
  • Operates a street sweeper and heavy sprinkler truck in cleaning gutters and City streets. Regulates valves controlling water spray in front end of the sweeper. Dumps sweeper piles in appropriate location(s) for collection of debris.
  • Collects scale tickets from disposal sites and completes required paperwork with the use of basic mathematical arithmetic.
  • Uses assigned tablet to complete daily route.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Two (2) years experience in the operation of automated side loader garbage trucks, rear loader garbage trucks with packer and dumping controls or related heavy automotive equipment which requires the possession of a CDL.

Special Requirements

A valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License (class B or higher) is required at time of application and must be maintained valid throughout employment in the classification.

Must be willing to work evenings, nights and weekends on a regular basis.

Selection Preference for City Residents
