Job Overview The Supreme Court of Montana seeks a Law Librarian to head the State Law Library in Helena, Montana. The role is technical, involving development and maintenance of the law library collection and services to fulfill user needs. It provides strategic vision and operational management of the law library and is not part of the Judicial Branch Pay Plan.

Job Duties

Supervises employees: assigns work, monitors progress, evaluates performance, assists with hiring and training, provides professional support and development, and provides backup support for staff functions.

Responsible for selecting, acquiring, cataloguing, and maintaining the law library collection, including laws, court decisions, law reports, treatises, textbooks, legal periodicals, journals, pamphlets, and other resources. Oversees classification and systematic evaluation of the collection regarding condition, retention, arrangement, and usage.

Oversees legal research in all information formats and trains library users in research resources. Oversees development and delivery of electronic legal research tools and resources.

Oversees the law library budget: prepares and monitors expenditures, reports, and recommends projections; manages vendor contracts.

Manages law library space and facilities, ensuring appropriate operations and services for patrons.

Organises and supervises library programmes and services. Promotes library services and stays abreast of issues related to legal topics and programming. May serve on professional boards and/or committees.

Establishes positive relationships with judges, court staff, Supreme Court Justices, Judicial Branch staff, State of Montana employees, the legal community, and pro se litigants.

Assumes a leadership role in Montana by providing services to pro se litigants. Provides legal reference and research to pro se patrons as needed, and to inmates detained within and outside of Montana. Requires extensive experience and vision related to serving pro se litigants in a rural environment.

Qualifications

Education: Master’s Degree in Library Science and a Juris Doctorate.

Experience: Professional law library work; staff supervision and management; budgeting; contract/project management.

Successful applicants are subject to a background check.

Salary $83,000.00 – $92,000.00 yearly.
