Position:
Principal Engineer Backend (Hybrid or 100% remote) – Greece
Type of work: Ideally Hybrid from Athens. Or Hybrid from Thessaloniki. Alternatively 100% remote from other cities 50km+ from Athens or Thessaloniki is also possible.
Work from office requirements: 1 day per week from the office, 4 days per week from the office. 100% remote option is also possible.
Type of contract: Full-time employment contract.

As a Principal Backend Engineer, you will take on a strategic technical leadership role, guiding the architectural direction of large-scale systems and helping shape backend engineering practices across the company. You will mentor fellow engineers, influence the technical roadmap, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-performing, reliable, and scalable backend solutions. This position combines deep technical expertise with high-level architectural vision and cross-team influence. Tech stack
The core backend systems are built using the Microsoft .NET ecosystem, with microservices architecture supported by messaging tools such as Kafka and RabbitMQ. The infrastructure leverages DevOps best practices and containerization technologies to support deployment and scalability. Observability, system health, and performance optimization are central components of the engineering culture. What will you do
Define and implement the architectural vision for mission-critical backend systems.
Write clean, scalable, and high-performance code that supports a variety of backend services.
Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, promoting engineering best practices and fostering technical growth.
Lead performance analysis and system optimization to ensure reliability at scale.
Collaborate closely with technical leaders, product teams, and other stakeholders to align backend architecture with business needs.
Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies that can elevate product capabilities.
Establish backend engineering standards and development frameworks across teams.
Contribute to the creation and execution of a long-term technical roadmap, ensuring future-readiness of backend platforms.
Ideally you bring
Extensive experience with the Microsoft .NET platform or willingness to ramp up quickly.
Proven success in designing and scaling distributed systems and service-oriented architectures.
Strong background in multiple programming paradigms and software design patterns.
Experience working with messaging systems like Kafka or RabbitMQ and related messaging strategies.
Solid understanding of DevOps workflows and containerized deployments.
Ability to drive solutions independently with attention to performance, reliability, and security.
Strong interest in observability, metrics, and data-informed decision-making.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical audiences.
Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
Full professional fluency in English.
