Overview Executive Underwriter OR AVP, Underwriting Director – Contract Surety at Zurich Insurance. Highly technical and market‑facing role focusing on Surety lines of business.

Location: Southern United States – Mississippi or Alabama, with offices in Ridgeland, MS, Birmingham, AL, or virtual office. 25% travel required.

Compensation: base salary ranging from $98,500 to $215,000, short‑term incentive eligibility, 401(k) match and other benefits.

Responsibilities

Underwrite and analyze new and renewal Surety business using the Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority.

Produce and support underwriting of new and renewal Surety business.

Internal marketing and cross‑sell within Zurich North America.

Execute external marketing strategy.

Adhere to underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, and regulations.

Establish and develop agency and broker relationships in the Southern region.

Work within limits and authorities on assignments of varying complexity.

Qualifications Executive Underwriter Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent with 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing area, OR 10+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support area, OR 3+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing with a Zurich‑approved Apprenticeship program, OR 8+ years in Claims/Support with a Zurich‑approved Apprenticeship program.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Experience delivering quotes for new and renewal business under time restraints.

Team‑oriented, strong communication skills.

Knowledge of Surety lines and legal and regulatory guidelines.

Underwriting Director Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent with 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing area, OR 14+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support area, OR 5+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing with a Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice program, OR 12+ years in Claims or Support with the Apprentice.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree.

In‑depth knowledge of Contract Surety lines.

Strong risk assessment and negotiation skills.

Established broker relationships in Mississippi and/or Alabama.

Superior relationship‑building, active listening, needs analysis, and win‑win negotiation.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and national/local filing regulations.
