Eligibility:

Only employees in City job titles in the bargaining unit 32 (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 134) are eligible to bid. The position is also open to the public for all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement.

Job Overview The City of Chicago’s Department of Water Management seeks a Foreman of Electrical Mechanics to supervise journey‑level electrical mechanics engaged in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical wiring systems and equipment found in water purification plants and substations.

Essential Duties

Study blueprints, specifications, and work orders; inspect work sites to assess installation, repair, and maintenance requirements.

Prepare cost estimates of labor, materials, equipment, and manpower needed to complete jobs.

Plan, assign, and schedule electrical jobs based on priorities and resource availability.

Order materials, equipment, and supplies; coordinate delivery to work sites.

Supervise work in progress to ensure efficiency, timeliness, and adherence to safety procedures.

Inspect completed jobs for compliance with specifications, quality standards, and municipal codes.

Assist in performing complex electrical jobs.

Train staff in work and safety procedures and evaluate their performance.

Coordinate with other trades to ensure operational efficiency at job sites.

Approve employee time records.

Maintain work records and prepare project status reports.

Test new work equipment and recommend possible acquisition.

Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered electrical mechanic apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, plus two years of journey‑level electrical mechanic experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Valid State of Illinois driver’s license required.

Some positions may require a first‑class FCC license.

Testing and monitoring equipment (ammeters, oscilloscopes).

Physical Requirements

Substantial lifting (up to 50 pounds).

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Ability to bend, stretch, twist, and reach.

Ability to use hand and power tools.

Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and step stools.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Principles, methods, and techniques of the electrical trade.

Repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance practices for the electrical trade.

Applicable safety and code standards (National Electrical Code, OSHA).

Use of safety equipment and protective gear.

Knowledge of municipal building, airport, water purification plant, and substation systems.

Test instruments and hand and power tools knowledge.

Familiarity with City and department policies and ordinances.

Supervisory principles, methods, and procedures.

Selection Requirements The position requires passing a written test/skills assessment and completing an interview. Test results will be released by the Department of Human Resources after analysis. Candidates with a passing score and suitable qualifications will be selected.
