Under the supervision of the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Equipment Operator I operates, maintains, and repairs various maintenance and landscape equipment and performs miscellaneous laboring duties in conjunction with maintenance and repair of state highways. The incumbent works individually or with a crew, may oversee less experienced coworkers, and may be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and out‑of‑town travel. The position is represented under collective bargaining.
Operate, maintain, and repair various maintenance and landscape equipment.
Perform miscellaneous laboring duties in conjunction with maintenance and repair of state highways.
Work with crew to perform highway maintenance tasks.
Oversee less experienced coworkers when required.
Respond to emergency calls and assist when needed.
Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and out‑of‑town travel as needed.
Comply with all Caltrans safety and operational policies.
Minimum Requirements Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the CALTRANS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I exam and current status on the state examination list for new-to-state candidates.
Valid, unrestricted Class B commercial driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
Drug screening clearance prior to hiring.
Experience in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (if any).
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Strong attention to safety procedures.
Capability to work independently or as part of a crew.
Working Conditions Position located at District 11/Maintenance Division/East and West Region San Diego County. Most work is done outdoors and may involve exposure to dust, wind, exhaust fumes, noise, uneven surfaces, extreme heat and cold, inclement weather, and moving traffic. Personal safety requirements include appropriate footwear, safety vest, long pants, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, respirator, face shield, chaps or other required safety gear.
