We’re looking for a strategic, community-focused planner to join our Transportation Planning Division. As a Transportation Planner III, you’ll play a key role in working with the community to advance the City’s goals for safe, complete streets and equitable mobility. You’ll lead the update of our Vision Zero Plan, coordinate with neighborhood groups on sidewalk improvements, and work directly with residents to identify and solve transportation challenges. This role also supports grant development and may oversee Planner II staff.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Federation of Public Employees and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Federation of Public Employees.

This job classification is in Management Category III for benefits purposes, which includes Six (6) additional Management Vacation days per calendar year and a monthly vehicle allowance of $250.00.
Essential Functions Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning essential duties not listed herein if such duties relate to the position.
Directly supports the Transportation Planning Division Manager with large, complex, and dynamic projects. Assists with both short and long-term planning, including but not limited to the update of the Vision Zero Plan and Sidewalk Master Plan Implementation Work Program.
Serves as a dedicated point of contact for neighborhood transportation requests including pedestrian & bicycle safety and accommodations, traffic flow, congestion, and traffic calming.
Works with industry members, local, county and state agencies, and City departments to formulate policies, procedures and programs relating to transportation issues.
Coordinates, prepares and submits projects to obtain local, state and federal funding.
Represents the City and coordinates transportation and transit planning projects with planning organizations, councils, boards, and other state and local agencies, consultants, and the public, including the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and Broward County.
Responds to public inquiries regarding transportation issues, programs, and projects.
Plans and organizes assigned work programs; reviews work for accuracy and timeliness; collaborates with others across the City and Department for technical aspects of a project.
May manage consultant relationships and contracts.
Represents the Department and City at Neighborhood Association meetings and other related meetings to listen and share information on transportation items.
Develops or manages the development of transportation plans, studies and analyses.
Conducts studies and/or projects involving research, investigations, and the preparation of materials for reports, presentations, and publications.
Plans and conducts community outreach efforts designed to reach public consensus.
Collects, analyzes basic data involved in planning, such as multimodal transportation, traffic, crash data and other factors pertinent to a transportation planning program.
Conducts field surveys on the transportation system to identify conditions and potential solutions for areas of the City.
Reviews concepts and design plans for roadway projects for multimodal accommodations and consistency with existing City and neighborhood transportation master plans.
Provides information and assistance to City officials, other government agencies, and the public.
Prepares written recommendations, memorandums, and makes presentations.
Provides coaching, training, and direction for Planner II and/or Planner I positions; supports work programs and overall performance.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in urban and regional planning, geography, public policy, architecture, or related field.
Three (3) or more years of professional experience in transportation planning or related planning, program planning and policy development.
Additional qualifying experience or coursework may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
Flexible schedule including attendance at various public meetings, which commonly occur during evening hours.
If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204).
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in urban and regional planning, geography, architecture, public or business administration, or closely related field.
American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
Previous experience working for or with government agencies.
Prior lead work and/or supervisory experience preferred.
Additional Notice As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.
Physical Standards The position is generally sedentary. Employees sit most of the time, but may walk or stand.
