Overview
Monterey County Health Department's Behavioral Health Bureau is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to fill a vacancy for the position of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner that can see patients in our Adults or Access System of Care. The program provides an array of mental health services to adults with mental illness, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, group services, and wrap-around supports. The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team and will play an integral role in managing each patient’s treatment course. Open Until Filled

Furnishes psychotropic medications under the supervision of a staff psychiatrist and in accordance with standardized procedures; monitors individuals’ responses to medication; educates individuals and their support system. Under the supervision of a psychiatrist, performs comprehensive psychiatric and physical evaluations including mental health status examinations and assessments of violence risk, self-harm, substance use, functioning level, health behaviors, trauma, sexual behaviors, and development history to establish diagnoses. Provides mental health services, including crisis intervention, and coordinates mental and physical health services for clients with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring physical disorders. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated patient care. Maintains accurate records of assessments, evaluations, care provided, and responses; utilizes the electronic health record system according to agency protocol. Plans and coordinates a program of care with physicians and families; facilitates referrals and follow-up care; determines hospital admission when appropriate. Delivers direct and indirect clinical services to patients and analyzes relationships between physiology and psychiatric disorders. Educates patients and families about mental health and medical conditions; promotes mental and physical health and wellbeing; advocates for recovery and community integration. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with legal standards and County regulations. Orders, evaluates, and interprets a variety of mental health diagnostic and laboratory tests as appropriate. Coordinates care with primary care providers, manages medication lists, and strives to avoid adverse drug events and interactions. Qualifications and Requirements
Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations governing Nurse Practitioners and behavioral health treatment, including medical records and Medicare/Medicaid regulations. Experience with psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and pharmacological management of mental health disorders; ability to provide full scope of patient care as a Nurse Practitioner in this setting. Ability to perform mental health and physical assessments, develop treatment plans, and document care accurately; strong collaboration and communication skills for multidisciplinary teams. Desirable qualifications: ability to speak, read, and write English and Spanish. Education: Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program leading to licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in California in the required specialty area. Experience: Typically three to five years of Nurse Practitioner experience providing full scope of care for higher acuity patients in the applicable specialty, with limited supervision. Required Conditions of Employment: background/reference checks, valid California driver’s license or workable alternative, active RN and NP licenses with required certifications, furnishing number and DEA license, flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, travel as needed.
